Ruth Hoin, 73, of Scranton, died Thursday at Riverside Rehab and Nursing Center, Taylor. She was the widow of Richard Hoin, who died Sept. 9, 1983.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Paul and Adelaide Herzog, she was educated in Scranton public schools and worked for many years in the garment industry.

Ruth had a great love for animals, especially cats. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed.

Surviving are a son, Michael Verdetto III amd wife, Paula, Lowell, Wyo.; two daughters, Ramona Lyckowski and husband, Vincent, Edwardsville; and Denise Hoin, Scranton; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter; Adelaide Williams; a brother Paul Herzog; and a sister Joan Kostage.

Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm. in the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton. Interment, Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Mrs. McKelvey was born in Kingston, Luzerne County. She graduated from Eastern Baptist Seminary with a degree in religious education. Her husband was John W. McKelvey, now deceased, who was pastor of Lansdowne United Methodist Church from 1944 to 1961. She was very active in church work.

Mrs. McKelvey was the author of two children's books, "Stories to Live By" and "Stories to Grow On". She also wrote "Finding God's Healing Power" on faith-healing experiences within the traditional church.

She is survived by a son, Harold Ellis; a daughter, Gertrude Ann McKelvey; five grandsons, and two great-grandsons.
