Biography

Mildred May Irvin was born on 5 November 1918 in Ogle County, Illinois.1,2 She and Melvin L. Banks were married on 2 September 1939.3 She died on 31 December 2014, at age 96, in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois.2 She was buried in Flora Cemetery, Flora Township, Boone, Illinois.2
Mildred May Banks, 96, of Rockford, formerly of Belvidere, IL, passed away, Wednesday, December 31, 2014, in Emeritus of Rockford. Mildred was born November 5, 1918, near Polo, Illinois to Raymond Irvin and Nora (Powell) Irvine. She met her future husband, Melvin Banks, at a barn dance in Boone County, and they were married at her parents home in Poplar Grove on September 2, 1939. Theirs was a love union that would last over 67 years, until Melvin's death in 2006. Mildred grew up in Poplar Grove. She was a 1936 graduate of Belvidere High School, and extended her education with one year of business courses. She married a farmer, so they loved in the country north of Kirkland, until they moved to Belvidere in 1990. She took much pride in being a homemaker. Everything was done with enjoyment and attention to detail, inside and also with the landscaping and lawn outside their home. Mildred was a member of First United Methodist Church in Kirkland, Bel-Mar Country Club of Belvidere, and served as a Pink Lady at Highland Hospital in Belvidere. With much enthusiasm, she loved golfing, bowling, dancing and reading; but her true passion in life was photography. She taught herself this talent. She was an active member of the Rockford Lens and Shutter Club, the Exakta Camera Club, and the Vistoso Club in Sun City Arizona. Every year, she entered the photographic competition at the Boone County Fair, where she won numerous ribbons and was awarded several times "The Best of Show". Late in Mildred's life, she was honored when the Keen Age Center in Belvidere invited her to hang 10 of her enlarged photographs in their main hall, as part of a permanent art collection. Three of her photographs of barns have been published in the book, "Barns of Illinois". Mildred and Melvin both loved to travel. For Mildred, it offered so many opportunities for photography. They traveled all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Later, Melvin became involved in agriculture business, which let them travel extensively in Europe with award trips. So they visited many countries in Europe, as well as Hawaii, Rio de Janerio, Hong Kong, and the Caribbean. Her favorite photographs were those of nature and famous places she had read about. Mildred arranged travel stories of many of these trips and presented them to church groups, club meetings, retirement homes, as well as to neighboring camera clubs, schools and twice to Rockford College. She made over 300 presentations. A stray cat came to their home. She was fed, and then invited into the garage, soon into their home, and "Kitty" became their adopted pet. Kitty may be the reason they built a home in Sun City Vistoso, near Tucson, Arizona. For 15 years they became "snowbirds", spending 6 months in Arizona, and the other 6 months in Belvidere. They enjoyed their second home in Arizona. Everyday, from their patio they could view the mountains, so close, and enjoy drives through the spectacular scenery, surrounding Tucson. During her life, Mildred met and photographed some well-known and famous people: Miss America from Belvidere; Senator John B. Anderson; U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Earl Butz; Olympic champion, Mark Spitz; jazz musician, Al Hirt; Big Band leader, Pete Fountain; photographer, Brett Weston, son of the famous photographer, Edward Weston; movie actors, Perry King and Ken Norton, making a movie in New Orleans.

Mildred is survived by nieces and nephews, Lori Pepper, Gene Lane, Cindy Lucke, Martin Banks, Allan Banks, Susan Price, among others as well as grandnieces and nephews; friends, Shirley (Sellers) Martin and Roberta and Dick Daniels.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; sister, Erma Ferb; and sister in-law, Floy Mae Lane.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2015, in Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Chapel, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere, with Rev. Woo, pastor of Kirkland United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Flora Cemetery. Memorials can be given in care of Kirkland United Methodist Church in Mildred's name.
