3 Wilbur O. Strawn, 92, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, in the Health Center of Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.
Born March 18, 1916, in rural Kirkland, he was the son of Osmer and Lillian J. (Delles) Strawn. He was raised on farms in DeKalb and Boone counties near Kirkland and graduated from Belvidere High School, where he received the "Mantle" in recognition of his achievements. Wilbur spent a year in the Civilian Conservation Corps in California before following his brother George to Northern Illinois State Teachers College where he met his future wife.
On April 12, 1936, Wilbur married Wilma "Billie" Hayden in Crown Point, Ind., when they eloped with their best friends, George and Sally Hollenback of Millbrook. They kept their marriage a secret for more than a year as both were students at Northern Illinois State Teachers College, and they didn't have enough money to set up an independent household at that time. They lived in DeKalb until 1947 when they moved to Malta. They returned to DeKalb in 1965.
Wilbur was hired by DeKalb Agricultural Association Inc. in December 1936 and worked there until his retirement in August 1982. He held several positions in the growing company including credit manager, treasurer, manager of the Ag's land sales and development and Profit Sharing Fund manager. He also served his church and community in various positions, including the Malta Grade School board of directors, DeKalb Bank as a bank trustee and Kishwaukee Community Hospital Auxiliary.
His whole family wishes to thank all of the employees at Oak Crest who cared for him as a loved member of their family, and Oak Crest residents who helped keep him going after Billie's death in January 2008. Don Redmond, Health Center resident, receives the family's special thanks for becoming his buddy at mealtimes and keeping his coffee cup filled. Thanks also go to Dorothy Dallinger, an Oak Crest resident and volunteer, who assisted both Wilbur and Billie at dinner times.
He is survived by four children, George (Candace) Strawn of Vienna, Va., Florence (Paul) Butler of Malta, Hugh (Joyce) Strawn of Mountain Grove, Mo., and Sally Strawn of Wellesley, Mass.; a son-in-law, William R. Britt Jr.; nine grandchildren, Teresa Strawn (Scott) Dyer, Cheryl Strawn (Roger) Knox, Adam (Yuki) Strawn, Brandon Strawn, Aaron (Donna) Butler, Adrian (Mary Pettey) Butler, Andrew (Ellen) Strawn, Carrie (Kevin) Tillman and Maxwell "Will" Strawn Hoffman; a sister, Myrla (Delavergne) Schumacher of Byron; two sisters-in-law, Patty Hayden Kegg of Indiana and Francie Quast-Hayden of Aurora; 11 great-grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.
