WONEWOC - Evelyn Irene "Evy" Fick, age 85, of Wonewoc, passed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Maplewood Nursing Home, Sauk City. Evy was born in Naeve Hospital, Albert Lea, Minn., to Charles William and Estelle Frances (Ross) Kilmer, on Feb. 17, 1919. At age 2 her family was swept away in a flash flood on the Lincoln Highway west of Rock River, Wyo. (near Laramie). Her father was moving the family to Bakersfield, Calif., to look for work. The bridge that normally covers a dry gulch was swept away during a heavy downpour, dumping their car into the raging water. Her father was able to save her, but her mother and baby sister were drowned. The next day, the Ford car was tipped back on its wheels and Evy and her father continued on to California. Evy lived in a migrant camp in California while her father picked fruit. Evy then went to live with her grandparents, George and Sarah (Gunsolus) Kilmer, in Minnesota. Her father came to Wisconsin, where he was employed to test milk for farmers in the Hillsboro area. While there he met and married Emma Paulina Piske in September 1924. In November 1924, Evy's grandmother died and then she came to Wisconsin to live in Wonewoc with her father and new mother and enrolled in the Wonewoc public schools. On Oct. 24, 1936, she married William C. Fick, the son of Frank and Albertina (Degner) Fick. They farmed for five years on Bill's Uncle Degner's farm on County Highway FF near Wonewoc. They were then offered the Fick home farm, located on Santas Loop near Hillsboro, which they bought. They lived there until 1958, when Bill was shot during a deer hunting accident and he was unable to continue dairy farming. They moved to a smaller farm near Wonewoc. Evy was active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school, Ladies Aid and finance committee and choir. In 1958, they joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wonewoc, where she was active in choir, Ladies Aid and Altar Guild. She worked for the dime store and other stores in Hillsboro, packaged dry milk for Wisconsin Dairies Milk Plant in Union Center, and made batteries at the Rayovac plant in Wonewoc for 13 years, retiring in 1982. In 1984, they sold their farm to their nephew, Richard Kilmer, but continued to live in the farmhouse. Evy was an avid crafter, knitting, crocheting, doing leather work and took up oil painting as a hobby in her 70s. She was an avid gardener and bird watcher, and was active in Homemakers and Juneau County affairs, working on the Juneau County Council on Aging, prayer circle and many other activities. Evy was an avid genealogist; the Kilmer family fled the German Palatine during the early 1700s and settled in New York, after being refugees in England, and she traced the Gunsolus family back to her sixth great-grandfather, Manual Gonzalez, who fled Spain during the Spanish Inquisition, and was the first settler of Sullivan County, N.Y. In 1953, the Ficks adopted a brother and sister who survive, Robert Fick of Milwaukee, and Frances (Gene) French of Anthony, Fla. She is also survived by her brothers, Russell (JoAnn) Kilmer of Richland Center, and Roy (Mary) Kilmer of Wonewoc; daughter-in-law, Nona (Bruce) Cook of Racine; brother-in-law, Melvin (Dorothy) Fick of Wonewoc; three sisters-in-law, Hulda (Degner) Fick of Arizona, and Martha Fick and Marion Fick, both of Beloit; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, William, on April 11, 1994; her mother, Estelle (Ross) Kilmer; her father, Charles Kilmer; step-mother, Emma (Piske) Kilmer; and her grandparents, George and Sarah (Gunsolus) Kilmer, and Frank and Lydia (Ott) Ross. Evelyn was cared for in her home during the last 10 years by her nephew, Richard Kilmer, and niece, Amy (Kilmer) Miller. She wanted to thank members of St. Paul's Church who visited her, the wonderful people who delivered Meals on Wheels, and all of her friends and relatives who visited while she was homebound. She spent the last few weeks of her life at Maplewood Nursing Home in Sauk City, and wanted to thank the staff of their wonderful care. Funeral services for Evelyn "Evy" Kilmer will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at ST. PAUL'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, Wonewoc, with Pastor Kevin L. Cortez officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Wonewoc.
