3 Obituary of Michael Petrocco
"We learn something from everyone who passes through our lives.
Some lessons are painful, some are painless, but all are priceless."
Michael "Big Mike" Petrocco, 73, of South Waverly, PA, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, September 14, 2017 following a brief illness.
He was born on October 22, 1943 in Sayre, PA, the son of the late Dominico and Delia Wispell Petrocco.
Mike was a graduate of Sayre High School. Following graduation, he joined the US Army, serving his country proudly during the Vietnam War. Upon returning from the service, Mike was employed with DuPont in Towanda, retiring after 25 years. Mike and his late father, Dominic, were accomplished carpenters and built many of the houses in South Waverly which has allowed for a great bond and friendship with the many neighbors on Broad Ave.
Mike was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was his son's best man in his wedding and was his best friend through out his entire life. The most important part of his life was his family and friends, especially his beloved grandchildren. He never missed his grandsons sporting events. Every fall he could be found on the sidelines o f the Soccer field cheering and encouraging his two favorite players, " the grandson" on to the win. One of his favorite spots was the dugout, selling food and drinks to help support the Sayre Soccer team.
Mike had so many interest and hobbies. Often during the nicer weather, he could be found on the golf course with his son or outside tending to t he yards on Broad Ave. No one ever went hungry in the Petrocco household, because there was always on of his favorite dishes brewing, whether it was his famous Italian meatballs, Pasta Fazul, or his every tasty spaghetti sauce. Those dishes were always a part of the famous Broad Avenue Block Parties, which also entailed many shenanigans such as lawn mower races and wheelbarrow fire pits right in the middle of the street. These parties were under the direction of the Broad Avenue Mayor, "Michae l Petrocco", until one year he didn't leave time to fulfill his preparation duties and the rowdy neighborhood voted to impeach him. Mike loved holidays, especially Halloween. There was no limit to the decorating and participating with his grandchildren in greeting the kids, passing out the candy, and scaring the adults.
Mike was an avid NY Yankees and NY Giants fan. He was a proud member of t he Sayre VFW, Sons of Italy Roma Madre Lodge #1342, VFW Skiff Bower Post #1536, American Legion Post #283, and Unico.
Mike was a man who touched many hearts along his journey here. A man who was always willing to help all those around him, and was a great listener. He will be missed by all those who knew him and loved him.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Shirley Petrocco at home, son, Michael Dominic Petrocco of Sayre, PA, grandchildren, Dominic T. Petrocco and Kaden M.W. Petrocco who were the loves of his life. He is also survived by his sisters, Rachel Petrocco and Joyce Petrocco, both of South Waverly, PA, and special family member, Liza Kennedy of East Smithfield, PA.
