Charles Laurel (Bud) Buffy1
M, #26283, b. 22 July 1923, d. 5 December 1944
Parents
Biography
Charles Laurel (Bud) Buffy was born on 22 July 1923 in Emsdale, Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada.
1 He died on 5 December 1944, at age 21, in Italy.
1 He was buried in Ravenna War Cemetery, Ravenna, Provincia di Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy.
The site for the cemetery was selected by the Army in 1945 for burials from the surrounding battlefields. Ravenna was taken by the Canadian Corps at the beginning of December 1944, and the burials in the cemetery there reflect the fighting for the Senio line and the period of relative quiet during the first three months of 1945. Many of the men buried there were Canadians.
Remembering a Young Soldier
Charles Laurel Buffy
c/o Tracy Butler, posted 5th November 2013
We would like you to meet one of Canada's young soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice, Mr. Charles Buffy. This young man was born in Emsdale, where at 9 years old his dad died. Then a year later his mother died, leaving Charles and his two younger brothers orphans. The baby was adopted out, but the two older boys were separated and sent from home to home - 13 homes, according to Charles' brother, Jim. One of the happiest times was when Charles and Jim were fostered together on the King Farm in Nipissing Township. Here they walked to school, helped on the pig farm and they were allowed to attend church services on Sunday. In 1939 he worked for a while on the township roads. As soon as they could the boys left foster care. Charles went down south where he worked in a canning factory. His attestation papers said he enjoyed fishing, swimming and played baseball. He joined the forces when he was 19 and wanted to join his friends in the 2nd 10th Dragoons. The captain said he was steady, reliable, had good learning ability and was co-operative and agreeable. He trained at Camp Borden and by 1943 was sent to England for more infantry training. He was then sent to Italy. Charles must have been a good soldier as he was promoted to Lance Corporal. In his picture he looks so proud! In Italy Charles was wounded on Dec. 5, 1943 and spent a month in the hospital. His brother Jim remembers Charles writing to him stating they weren't good enough to finish him. A year later, Dec 5, 1944 Charles went missing in action and was later confirmed dead. He died at the age of 21. Some of his possessions were a pipe, an Italian-English dictionary, and a pocket watch. This young man faced many hardships in his life, but rose up and overcame them. Who knows what other things he could have accomplished if given the chance. When we bow our heads this November 11th we will be thinking of Mr. Charles Buffy and thanking him for his sacrifice. May he rest in peace, and may his name on the cenotaph allow people to remember all the men and women who fight for a better world.
