Wilford (Wick) Edwin Hilborn was an Owner in General Store. Wick & Lona owned and operated a general store on the Main Street of Thedford, ON Canada for many years. My mother, June Hilborn, worked in the dry goods section after she graduated from high school until she married in 1946. One of my first memories is of going to town with my mother on Saturday to do the weekly shopping at this store (early 1950's). My mother had her shopping list for groceries and would tell the person behind the counter what she wanted and wait while it was found and prepared for her. I remember this because one day as I was sitting on the counter, I couldn't resist helping myself to a lovely store bought chocolate cookie that was sitting with a lot of others on a rack right beside me. My mother was horrified when she realized what I had done. As I grew up, I would spend a lot of time as the school supply and book section of the store and later buying dry goods for my many early sewing & needlework adventures.
Wick always ran the grocery section of the store, while Lona was more in the dry goods section. As the years went by, they tried to keep up with the times and converted the grocery side of the store to a self serve. Eventually, the grocery part was closed and it became a dry goods, clothing and gift shop until they retired and sold the store. They were both quiet, gentle people that gave a lot to their community.
