Family creates scholarship in son's memory
By Mary Shapiro, Staff writer

Thanks to a Ballwin area family who lost their son to a heart problem in 1999 - three area students in faith-based schools will get the assistance they need to continue their education. The Sabada family has created a scholarship program for students who attend - or will attend - parochial and other private high schools.

Darrik Sabada, then 16 and a junior at St. John Vianney Catholic High School in Kirkwood, died from cardiac arrhythmia in October 1999. His death occurred at the Westbrooke subdivision home where he lived with his parents, Nancy and David, and sister, Kimberly, 13, a seventh-grader at Parkway Southwest Middle School.

“We had no warning, and this was totally unpredictable,” Nancy Sabada said. "He was at home watching TV at the time, when his heart suddenly contracted and did not relax. He died in about 15 seconds, “ she said. “He would not have been saved if paramedics had been sitting next to him. We did pulmonary resuscitation and paramedics worked to save him, but there was no way. He had just played football the Friday night before."

Because of the family's appreciation for faith-based schools - the family is Lutheran - and hoping to make something good come from their loss, family members started the Darrik S. Sabada Memorial Scholarship Foundation in 1999.

"The idea of going in this direction came from Mike Ploesser, who is general manager at the business my husband and I co-own, A-Mrazek Moving Systems in Kirkwood, a United Van Lines agency,” Nancy said. "We were trying to set up something in Darrik's memory, and we were talking about doing something to ensure other children could benefit," she said. "Mike came up with the idea of a scholarship, which was so easy to set up that we feel it was part of a bigger plan.”

'The partial scholarship - average tuition at private and faith-based high schools is about $6,100 a year - is guaranteed" for all remaining years of high school. “To receive it, a young person must maintain a C average, be a full-time student, continue to show financial need and, starting their sophomore year, need to pass an annual drug test," Nancy said.
“Students write an essay to apply for the scholarship, which is based on need and academics, as well as character and integrity and commitment to giving of yourself to others," she said. "A student also must provide two names for recommendations." This is the first year the scholarships have been presented.

The recipients are Jessica Fink, an eighth-grade student at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in south St. Louis who plans to attend Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood this fall; Maggie Welch, a freshman at Cor Jesu Academy in South County; and Samuel Floyd, an eighth-grader at Hope Lutheran School in south St. Louis and who will attend Lutheran South High School.

Jessica's mother, who died last year, had wanted her daughter to continue in Catholic schools. Jessica will receive a total of $16,000.

Maggie's father died earlier this school year, and the scholarship will help her continue at her school. She'll receive a total of $3,000.

And Samuel, who will get a total of $8,000, comes from a single-parent family.

“All of them have overcome tremendous obstacles in their lives remained positive and not allowed. their situation to limit them,” Nancy said.

The scholarship's main fund-raiser is an annual golf tournament, which last year raised $60,000. Individual tax deductible donations have brought in more than $57,000. The 2001 tournament - a four-person scramble - is set for a shotgun start at 1 p.m. June 4 at the Stonewolf Golf Course in Fairview Heights, IL. The cost is $1,500 for a foursome or $400 for an individual. About 144 golfers are expected. To sign up or to make a contribution to the fund, call Nancy Sabada at (636) 225-6054. "We've been blessed since Darrik's death; his witness lives on," she said.

Darrik S. Sabada Memorial
Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament

FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT
To provide educational funding for children who want to attend a private high school who are without the financial means to do so.

Because of your generosity we have been able to increase the number of recipients from 3 to 6 scholarships per year. To date we have committed over $200,000 to 30 children.

HOW YOU CAN HELP...
The tenth Annual Darrik S. Sabada Memorial Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2009, at Missouri Bluffs Golf Course.

As you know, the Foundation was set up in memory of Darrik in an effort to assist children sharing similar educational values as Darrik, succeed in achieving their educational dreams. Darrik deeply valued his faith-based education; the foundation provides tuition assistance for children who would be unable to attend a faith-based private high school without financial support.

The golf tournament is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. on June 8 with a lunch; the driving range and putting green will also be open. A 12:30 shotgun start will kick-off the four person scramble. Followed by a dinner buffet, silent and oral auction to conclude the days activities.

We realize not everyone is able to play in the tournament. However, you can still help make the tournament a success. Any donation amount is very much appreciated. We are dependent on people, like you, who have graciously given through hole sponsorship, auction item donations, prizes and giveaways. The Foundation is classified as a 501 (c) (3) public organization and as such, your donation is 100% tax deductible. Our Federal ID# is 43-1870059.

Sincerely,
David, Nancy & Kimberly Sabada
