William H. McConnell Jr., 79, formerly of South Waverly, currently of Bradford, N.Y., passed away at the Schuyler Hospital Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004.
Born Feb. 10, 1925 in Sayre, he was the son of William H. Sr. and Bessie Sinsabaugh McConnell.
He was a graduate of Sayre High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre.
He was formerly employed for 22 years by the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a signal engineer, by Conrail and General Railway Signal, Rochester, N.Y., for 12 years, retiring in 1988.
William served a term of office on the South Waverly Borough Council.
He was an avid stamp collector.
He was a member of the Skiff-Bower VFW Post No. 1536 of Sayre and a member of the Waverly Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1490.
A sister, Pauline Johnson, and a brother, James McConnell, predeceased him.
He is survived by: his wife of 55 years, Patricia, at home; sons and daughters-in-law, William and Susan McConnell of Portland, Ore., Donald and Linda McConnell of Rochester and Dale and Jean McConnell of Rochester; his grandchildren, Martina Powell of Fairport, N.Y., Amy Fogarty of Rochester, Leigh McConnell of Portland, James McConnell of Dayton, Ohio, and Megan McConnell of Portland; one great-grandson, Jason Powell of Fairport; brother and sister-in-law, Burton and Peggy McConnell of Horseheads, N.Y.; a sister, Betty Lassiter of Waverly, N.Y.; his brothers, John McConnell of South Waverly and Gerald McConnell of Frederick, Md.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may call Tuesday, March 2 from noon-2 p.m. at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St., Athens.
Funeral and committal services will follow Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Anne Bey Canfield, pastor of the Waverly United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will be at a later time in Glenwood Cemetery, Waverly.
Military honors will be accorded by the Valley Color Guard.
