Irene Raymond Matheson was born on 10 July 1897 in Saskatchewan, Canada. She died on 19 February 1898, at age 0, in Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Died in infancy. Date of burial - Feb. 19, 1898

Daughter of Rev, E. K. Matheson and Mrs. J. K. Matheson.
Friday, March 11, 1898 - Saskatchewan Herald
Monday, February 19, was a sad day for us when our Principal’s daughter Irene was laid in the grave in our School Cemetery. Irene was only a babe, but many of the girls and boys had learned to love her and to look for her coming with her mother over to the school, as she has done during the sunny days this winter. Twelve of the smaller boys acted as pallbearers. Rev. D.D. MacDonald took the service in the School and said the last sad words at the grave.
Inspector Chisholm and several of the leading citizens of Battleford were present. We returned from the cemetery reminded again that “Brief life is her our portion.” Irene’s breast is now covered with a mantle of whitest snow, and her pure spirit has gone to him who said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”.

Biographical history
Edward K. Matheson was born on April 21, 1855 in Kildonan, Rupert's Land to Hugh and Letitia (Pritchard) Matheson. He received his early education in the Anglican parish schools of Middlechurch, Kildonan and St. John's.

In the summer of 1877, Matheson joined a group of Anglican missionaries travelling west from Manitoba to the North-West Territories. Between 1877 and 1879, he taught at missions in Snake Plains and Sandy Lake. In 1879, Matheson began studies in divinity at Emmanuel College in Prince Albert. He was ordained deacon on May 2, 1880 and achieved priesthood on April 10, 1881. Matheson graduated from Emmanuel College in 1882 as its first divinity graduate, winning the Lieutenant-Governor's prize for academic achievement.

Between 1882 and 1886, Matheson served the parishes and missions of St. Catherine, St. Paul and Fort Carlton in the Prince Albert district. As a missionary during the North-West Rebellion of 1885, he successfully organized meetings of parishioners in order that resolutions of loyalty might be passed in spite of the fighting. Matheson was appointed Rural Dean of Carlton and later Rural Dean of Battleford.

In August, 1886, Matheson was appointed the first Anglican clergyman at Lethbridge. He organized the construction of St. Augustin Church which opened on March 20, 1888 and presided there until he was appointed to St. George's Church at Battleford on May 24, 1888. He presided at St. George's until 1893 when he was appointed the first Anglican missionary of Saskatoon. He later opened missions at Prongua, Willowmore and Baljennie.

In 1895, Matheson was appointed principal of the Battleford Industrial School and served as such until the school's closure in 1914. He was also ordained Archdeacon of Athabasca in 1904 and Canon of St. Alban's Pro-Cathedral in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on November 1, 1912. Matheson retired from service in January, 1923 but maintained a keen interest in the activities of the Anglican church. In May, 1924, he received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Emmanuel College in recognition of his distinguished service to the church. Rev. Canon Edward Matheson, D.D. died on January 1, 1931 in Battleford.

Edward Matheson was married to Josephine Raymond from July, 1892 until her death in 1903. He later married Eleanor Shepphird in 1905.

REV. CANON EDWARD K. MATHESON.

In 1912 Rev. Edward K. Matheson was made a Canon of the Church of England. He has been a minister in the Anglican church for years and for some thirty-five years has made his home in Battleford. He was born on the 21st of April, 1855, in Kildonan, Manitoba, a son of Hugh and Letitia (Pritchard) Matheson, likewise natives of Manitoba. His father taught school in early manhood and later engaged in farming, which he followed the remainder of his active life. He died in June, 1864. Mrs. Matheson died on the 26th of February, 1909.

The public schools of his birthplace afforded Edward K. Matheson his preliminary education and later he attended St. John's College School and Emmanuel College at Prince Albert, from which latter institution he was graduated in 1882. It was in that institution that he studied for the ministry and he was ordained on the 2d of May, 1880, two years prior to his graduation. He was stationed at Lethbridge two years and since that time has held various charges in Saskatchewan. He has resided in the old town of Battleford since 1888. When Mr. Matheson came west in 1877 he walked all of the way from Winnipeg, driving oxen
who drew Red River carts containing his household goods. There was no town at Battleford then and he located at Sandy Lake, where he engaged in school teaching for several years. Later he had charge of the Indian Industrial School in Battleford, being active in that connection for nearly twenty years. He was appointed superintendent of Indian Missions in
1914, and has since been active in that position. In 1912 Mr. Matheson was made Canon of the Church of England. He is one of the most highly esteemed and respected men in the district and is widely known for his charity and kindliness.

Mr. Matheson has been twice married. He was married to Miss Josephine K. Raymond of London, Ontario, on the 15th of June, 1892, and they had three children, all of whom died young. Mrs. Matheson's death occurred on the 24th of May, 1903. On the 1st of June, 1905, Mr. Matheson was married to Miss Eleanor Sheppird, a graduate of the Church of England Deaconess House, Toronto, Ontario. They were the parents of one child, who has passed away. Mr. Matheson is an exemplary member of the Masonic craft, of which he is a past master. He has a wonderful collection of relics which he acquired from time to time and is very fond of exhibiting them. As a pioneer citizen of Battleford he has been influential in the continued growth of the community.
