Gertrude "Trudy" Whitney
August 17, 1914 - May 13, 2011

Gertrude Irene Whitney, passed away, May 13, 2011. The first of four daughters to bless the marriage of George and Charlotte (Dellow) Wonch, she was born in Shepherd, Michigan on August 17, 1914. She graduated from Shepherd High School in 1932, immediately entered the Central State Teachers College (Central Michigan University) located in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan and received her teaching degree in July 1936. On January 1, 1939, she took as her groom, Gordon Oramel Whitney, a resident of Mio, Michigan and a pharmacist in Beaverton, Michigan, where Gordon was practicing his profession.

This blessed union continued to flourish for 64 glorious and adventurous years until Gordon’s’ passing in 2002. Their union was blessed with two children, Dennis and Candice (Whitney) Wagner, both of who survive; her daughter-in-law of 48 years, Marvilyn; five grandchildren; Michelle, Gordon, Elizabeth, Wendy and Jenny and a multitude of great- grandchildren plus 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by 1 sister, Leola Sherwood of West Virginia and several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude also served her community in numerous areas including the United Methodist church; as a Life Member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and serving as a member of the Endicott-Koerner Grand Family 1982- 1983 Michigan Grand Family. Gertrude was artistically talented. She excelled as a quilt maker, seamstress, and crewel work. Gertrude’s personal pleasure after her family was nature, especially butterflies and birds, dancing with the love of her live, and mentoring and monitoring her students. She loved hearing from former students and was totally committed to her profession as an educator during her entire stay on this earth.

A celebration of her 96 years on God's great earth will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main St., Brighton, MI on Sunday, May 15 at 10:30 AM. Family and friends may gather beginning at 10 AM until time of service. A gift of love to the American Diabetes Association, 30200 Telegraph Rd., Suite 105, Bingham Farms, MI 48025, would be appreciated by the family and a special benefit to the community.
