Autopsy Report On Kathy Kerr Is Inconclusive
October 18, 1990
By Les Bowen, Daily News Sports Writer
Daily News sports writer Bill Fleischman contributed to this story
Flyers winger Tim Kerr remained in seclusion yesterday at his home in Haverford, the day after his wife, Kathy, passed away, apparently from complications arising from childbirth.
Tim Kerr's agent, Steve Mountain, said Kerr asked him to thank the many people who have expressed their support and concern.
"Tim said knowing that so many people care has been a great comfort to him in a very difficult time," Mountain said.
Meanwhile, Kathy Kerr's sudden death became even more of a puzzle yesterday, when preliminary autopsy reports were inconclusive. Pennsylvania Hospital spokeswoman Valerie Smith said the autopsy, performed yesterday, ''found no evidence of a blood clot from the pelvic area, which had been suspected."
A source close to the situation said that doctors initially told Tim Kerr they thought a blood clot had traveled to his wife's lungs and caused her death. Now, further tests will be performed. Smith said results are expected ''within several days."
Mountain said there will be a viewing for family and friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the Donohue Funeral Home, West Chester Pike and Lynn Boulevard in Upper Darby. A private burial will take place tomorrow. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in Kathy Kerr's memory to the Flyers' Wives Fight for Lives charity, which benefits leukemia research.
Kathy Kerr, 30, was the mother of three daughters - Jackie, Kayleigh and Kimberly, who was born on Oct. 6. After the Caesarean section birth, Kathy Kerr contracted a pelvic infection and remained in Pennsylvania Hospital, although she told friends and family Monday evening that she hoped to go home within a few days.
Flyers spokesman Rodger Gottlieb said the team was seeking an appropriate way to honor Kathy Kerr before tonight's game at the Spectrum against Quebec, but he couldn't provide specifics. Kathy Kerr served two years as chairwoman of the Flyers' Wives Fight for Lives Carnival. She was the former Kathy Bennett, a 1978 graduate of Archbishop Prendergast High in Upper Darby, and a former administrative secretary to Flyers owner Ed Snider.
Tim Kerr's parents flew in yesterday from Windsor, Ontario, and his Flyers teammates arrived from Pittsburgh, where they defeated the Penguins, 5-1, Tuesday night. Several Flyers said they wished they could do something to help Kerr, but wanted to respect his privacy while he was dealing with relatives and arrangements.
The Flyers practiced yesterday in Pittsburgh before coming home. Some players said that as glad as they would be to get back to their families, they dreaded the constant reminders of the tragedy they would face today at the Spectrum.
"I think tomorrow's going to be really tough," team captain Ron Sutter said. "I think tomorrow will be a little bit tougher (than Tuesday's game)."
Coach Paul Holmgren said he understood what Sutter meant.
"Out here (in Pittsburgh), it's just you guys (print reporters)," he said. "Back there, we're going to see TV cameras and everything. It's going to be a hard day, for sure."
