1 John Thomas Bickel, 70, Andrews, died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday (May 3, 2005) at his home.
Mr. Bickel worked in quality control at Our Sunday Visitor for 25 years before retiring July 20, 1979. He then worked at Preferred Technologies as a supervisor from 1984 to 1997. He also owned the Andrews Sports Bar from 1978 to 1981. He was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689 in Huntington and the Eagles Lodge in Wabash.
Mr. Bickel was born March 28, 1935, in Huntington to Norbert E. "Fritz" and Garnet M. Fulton Bickel. He married Madonna "Mae" Garrison on May 4, 1957, and his wife survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Kristen Martz of Huntington and Lynn Crickmore of Andrews; three sons, Jim Bickel and Bob Bickel, both of Andrews, and Joe Bickel of Huntington; six sisters, Annie Olinger and Rita Kulb, both of Huntington, Nancy Burnau of Fort Wayne, Sondra Ness of Huntington, Charlotte Smart of Roanoke, and Pam Fleck of Andrews; and eight brothers, Bob Bickel, Jim Bickel, Dan Bickel, Tony Bickel, Joe Bickel, Patrick Bickel, and Mark Bickel, all of Huntington, and Fred "Fritz" Bickel of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Smart, and two brothers, Paul "Punk" Bickel and Dick Bickel.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Deal-Rice & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Andrews Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Pastor Mark Whinery and Pastor Jerry Felts officiating.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Andrews.
