Michael H. "Many Hawks" Smith
Birth: 1957
Death: Jan. 3, 2010, Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA

Obituary
Michael "Many Hawks" entered the next life on Sunday. A proud descendant of the Lakota Sioux, Michael honored his ancestors by leading a life of integrity, hard work, and awareness. He tolerated all people but didn't trifle with fools. He kept his body free from alcohol and drugs, but he enjoyed eating huge portions of good food without compromising his lean, muscular physique, to the astonishment of everyone who knew him. Michael was Recycling Center Supervisor for Green Valley Disposal, where he earned much respect. Up before dawn to arrange the day's work, able to repair anything that broke down and maximize the efficiency of anything that could be improved, He was a kind, effective manager of the people who worked for him and an extraordinary asset to the people who hired him. Michael was closely aligned with nature. In this life he never met a horse he couldn't calm, a bird he couldn't identify, a dog he couldn't inspire to howl for joy at his touch. In spirit, the Wolf was his brother, the Owl his guide.
Michael leaves behind his father, Bill Smith of Grand Blanc, MI; sister, Claire Dedow, her husband, Mark and their children, Lauren and Greg Dedow of Clarkston, MI; soul mate, Susan Ward; dear friends, Bryce Keel and Marge Pitts; and many others.
He was preceded into spirit by his mother, Dr. Clarea Ann Smith.
Memorials may be made to the American Indian College Fund, Hospice Care Inc., and the American Cancer Society. Michael's ashes will be scattered a year from now at Bear Butte Mountain, SD, according to Lakota tradition. Individuals who knew Michael may create their own private ritual, whenever they hear an owl booming in the forest, or sense an intelligent and worthy essence riding the breeze. We shall meet again in spirit, beloved Many Hawks.
