Wilfred George Bassett
January 13, 1942 - January 19, 2012
Birthplace: Jackson, Michigan
Resided In: Issaquah WA, USA
Service: February 18, 2012

Wilfred George Bassett died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 19th, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 70 years old. George will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father & grandfather, as well as a friend and mentor to many in the communities in which he worked and lived.

The son of Vera Agnes Scheffel and Wilfred George “Bill” Bassett, George was born on Friday, January 13, 1942 and known as “Jinx” by his family and childhood friends. Raised in Jackson Michigan, he attended Jackson High School, where he was the 1959 & 1960 Oratory Champion at the Michigan Boys State competition. In 1960 he won first place in Dramatics & Debate and gave the commencement speech for his graduating class. Upon graduation, he received the Regents-Alumni scholarship for his attendance to the University of Michigan.

At the University of Michigan, George was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity, graduating with a B.A. in Pre-Law Studies in 1966. In August of 1966, he and Edwina Jean Woszczak were married at the United Methodist Church in Inkster Michigan.

George received his J.D. from University of Michigan Law School in 1969 and passed the bar in both Michigan and Washington states. That same year, George and Edwina moved to Olympia, WA where George began his legal career in the Washington State Attorney General’s office. After moving to practice law in Seattle, George and Edwina took up residence on Mercer Island where their three children were born and raised.

George was a respected member of the WA State Bar Association for 42 years, first with the AG’s office in Olympia, then in Seattle with Ogden, Ogden & Murphy, as a founding member of the Bassett & Morrison law firm, and finally as a share holder at Graham & Dunn PC. He authored the Washington Civil Trial and Evidence Manual, From Voir Dire to Verdict which was published by the WA State Bar Association in 1978. George continued to serve as the Manual’s editor-in-chief for many years. His career included some of the first environmental coverage actions filed and tried in Washington state. He specialized in complex multi-party litigation, Insurance Recovery, Employment and Tort litigation including product liability, employment rights, wrongful termination cases, and civil rights cases, among others.

An active member of Seattle First Baptist Church in the 1970s, and Mercer Island Presbyterian Church from the mid 1980s until his passing, George volunteered his legal services in the Seattle and Mercer Island communities. Compassionate and fair minded, he was respectful to everyone and a frequent advocate for people in need. While a member of the First Baptist Church, George worked with the Reverend Gus Hintz to establish one of Seattle’s first teen runaway centers and volunteered as a Child Advocate for teens trying to emancipate. At MIPC, George served as an Elder on various committees working closely with the Pastors and staff. In the late 1980s, George helped develop MIPC’s Confirmation class curriculum for high school students and also taught many youth and adult Christian education classes over the years.

Married for 45 years, George and Edwina have been an example of faithfulness and support for one another. A loving father, George took an active roll in his children’s lives. He taught them faith and grace in adversity, the importance of an articulate, well reasoned argument, how to plant a garden, make a pie, bait a hook, and dance with a partner. George and Edwina taught their children, by their example, the importance of laughter, to always have a good bottle on hand for celebrating, and when all else fails, to love one another. Diagnosed with cancer in 2005, George and Edwina moved to Issaquah, WA to be closer to their four beloved “grand-girls”, where George resided until his death.

A fabulous dancer, music collector, history buff, avid gardener, and gourmet cook, George had many interests and hobbies. He was a long time member of the Washington Fly Fishing Club, a subscriber to the Seattle Opera, the Issaquah Village Theater, and the ACT Theater in Seattle. George’s interests always required research and in depth reading. Whether at work or at home, he could usually be found sitting in a favorite chair with glasses pushed down his nose, reading material and pen in hand, making notes on a legal pad.

A member of the University of Michigan Alumni organization and a lifelong fan of University of Michigan football, he dutifully watched every game and taught both his children and grandchildren the U of M fight songs. Every fall, the entire family was newly outfitted with Michigan sweatshirts to be worn on game days, and as often as possible in the off season. If there is a rallying cry at the Bassett house, it is “Go Blue!”

George is survived by his wife, Edwina Bassett of Issaquah WA, his children Emily J. Snyder (Eric), Vanessa J. Bassett, John E. Bassett (Brandy) of Sammamish WA, and four grandchildren, Melia Snyder, Jayna Snyder, Olivia Snyder, and Georgia Bassett. Also, his brother, Leland K. Bassett (Tina) of Detroit, MI.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to the David Pettigrew Memorial Foundation online at http://www.pettigrewfoundation.com/donate
or the Vera Bassett Nursing Scholarship Fund thru the Jackson Community College foundation at 517.787.0244 or email foundation@jccmi.edu.

A memorial service celebrating George’s life will be held at 1pm on February 18, 2012 at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, 3605 84th Ave SE, Mercer Island. A reception hosted by his law firm, Graham & Dunn PC, 2801 Alaska Way, Suite 300, Seattle, will be held at 3pm following the church service.
