Record $450,000 Left to Jackson Community College Vera Bassett Nursing Scholarship Fund
Earl Peterson - Vera Bassett 'Love Story'
SOURCE: Bassett & Bassett
JACKSON, Mich., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Love found in the winter of life by two former Jackson residents has blossomed into the largest single estate gift ever to the Jackson Community College Foundation -- one that will provide at least 25 nursing scholarships a year to Jackson Community College (JCC).
The Vera Agnes Bassett Nursing Scholarship at Jackson Community College is receiving approximately $450,000 from the estate of the late Earl Peterson, who honored Bassett, the love of his life, by endowing her favorite programs.
Another gift of approximately $230,000 was given to the JCC Foundation to be held in stocks and equities to benefit the Dahlem Environmental Education Center, making the total estate gift $680,000. The announcement was made by JCC President Lee Howser.
Earl Peterson was an electrical engineer and a lifetime bachelor who spent the majority of his life caring for his mother. After his mothers's death, Earl moved into Vista Grande Villa and met Vera Bassett in 1987; Earl was 74 and Vera was 75. Peterson died earlier this year at age 84. "It's a real love story," said Vera's son, Leland Bassett, of Farmington Hills, Mich. "They found each other in the winter of their lives and became sweethearts in love for their remaining years."
Leland and his wife, Tina, maintained a relationship with Earl after Vera's death in 1992. "It was truly a whirlwind romance," said Tina Bassett. "They became constant companions. She was the love of his life and he meant the world to her. Although they maintained separate residences and never legally married, they were more married than most married people."
Vera Bassett was an instructor of life sciences at JCC from 1962 to 1977. She was instrumental in establishing the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program at JCC. She taught nearly 800 LPN graduates who consistently scored at the top of state licensing exams.
The Vera A. Bassett Nursing Scholarship was established by her family in 1992 when she died at the age of 80.
"Vera Bassett had a life philosophy that each of us has a responsibility to make this world a better place as we pass through it," JCC president Howser said. "Vera did that for her nursing students, fellow faculty, her family and Earl Peterson. Now Earl Peterson has made the world a better place for all of us by making it possible for the JCC Nursing Program to thrive and flourish."
JCC offers four nursing programs: licensed practical nurse (LPN), associate in applied science degree in nursing (AAS-N), the LPN to RN transition program, and the JCC/University of Michigan bachelor of science in nursing.
The JCC Nursing Program currently graduates approximately 75 nursing candidates each year. The program consistently adapts to changing health care needs, including advanced medical and computer technologies; critical thinking, leadership and management techniques; and learning experiences in the community.
JCC serves more than 6,000 students each semester from its main campus and three extension centers in downtown Jackson, Adrian and Hillsdale. Individuals wishing to make contributions to the Vera Bassett Nursing Scholarship, or other JCC Foundation scholarship programs, should contact Trish Kelly-Knight at 517-787-0244. Potential nursing students interested in applying for the scholarships should contact JCC Student Financial Services at
517-796-8410.
