3 Shirley was born in Ft. Gibson to her parents Everett "Bud" and Bessie (Slape) Smith, and died at OU Medical Center. She was a wife and mother to three ornery boys. She was a wonderful sister and aunt, a loyal friend and confidante. Shirley was a caregiver to her mother during the last few years of her mother's life. She was a talented artist and loved painting and arts and crafts and enjoyed tending her rose garden. Shirley took great pride in her cosmetology career-she owned her own salon and served as the Executive Director of the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology from 1980 to 1996, where she was known for encouragement and compassion towards licensees and worked tirelessly to elevate the status of the profession. She also worked several years with the Women's Offender Program at the Department of Labor where she helped many women transition back to regular life. Predeceased by her former husband and father of her three sons Curtis Hastings, son Phil, brothers Clayton Smith and Bill Smith, infant brother Thomas Darius, sister Essie May Taylor.
The family suggests memorials be made to your local food bank. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2012, from 3-8 pm at Guardian West Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee at 2 pm Thursday, October 25, 2012.
