OKLAHOMA CITY
On June 1, 2017, a beautifully warm and sunshiny day, Jim was born into eternal life at home after a long illness. Jim was born in Muskogee, OK to Curt and Shirley (Smith) Hastings Nov. 8, 1947. The oldest of three brothers, Jim lived the first several years of his life in Muskogee. With family in nearby Fort Gibson, he had many wonderful memories of playing around the old fort and fishing with his dad, brothers and cousins and helping out at his aunt and uncle's Fort Cafe. He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1966, where he served as senior class president, and then attended Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Neches off the coast of Vietnam. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked several years in the furniture and flooring business in Shawnee, a job which enabled him to gift his parents with furniture and carpeting for the family home. Jim returned to college at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and in Aug. 1984, completed his bachelor's degree in radiologic technology. Jim's career began in X-ray at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City and took him to hospitals in Honolulu, Phoenix and Los Angeles. He became certified in MRI and CT and traveled all over the United States working for GE medical systems before finally retiring from the MRI department of the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center. A consummate professional, Jim was intelligent, hardworking and dedicated to his job -- his great sense of humor, kindness and compassion put many patients at ease. Jim especially loved caring for the WWII veterans as his own father was a Marine who fought on Iwo Jima. At the VA, one of his first patients, dirty and possibly homeless, told Jim, "Thank you for being so nice to me." One of his last patients he scanned said, "Jim, you're a good man." Another tech, who mentored under Jim, said it best, "You remember the good ones." Jim had a lifelong love of cars, motorcycles, and the open road, planes and boats, music, books, the ocean, power tools, OU football, dinners at nice restaurants, where he was always a generous tipper. With his beautiful blue eyes and his trademark sharply pressed shirt, jeans and cowboy boots, Jim was loved by and brought joy to many people, and was so interested in everyone he met. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Phil; and our fur baby, Maui. He is survived by his wife, Janelle; brother, Don and wife Sherri; nephew, Zach; niece, Erin; aunts, Joyce Gully, Mary Elizabeth Taylor, and Ruth Moss; uncle, Jerry Hastings; many cousins; his oldest and dearest friend, Don Stewart and wife Jorun, of Norway; and our fur babies, Zuzu and Bailey. Jim, the best times of my life were with you. You were my best friend and soul mate and I will love you and miss you every day for the rest of my life. I am thankful to God for your life and that I was part of it.
