Biography

Fern Irene Cornwell was born on 5 July 1924 in Sonoma County, California.1 She and Charles Wendell Piner were married about 1944.1 She died on 15 September 2007, at age 83, in Napa County, California.1
PINERS
A family company serving our community for 66 years!

In 1946, Fern and Wendell Piner bought an old Victorian home on Pueblo Avenue in Napa and settled in to raise their family. Very soon, this home also became the center of their business as they welcomed 12 patients and launched their board and care home.

By the early sixties, the Piners had decided to expand their business, and began construction on the Nursing Home and Guest Home. Because of the untimely death of Wendell in 1964, Fern was left to open the new facilities later that year on her own. She successfully operated the businesses until 1985, when she retired and her son Gary took over.

Piner's Guest Home State Licensed Facility
1800 PUEBLO AVENUE
NAPA, CA, 94558

Piner's was established in 1946 by Wendell and Fern Piner for the need of service for the local Napa Community. We are an Eden Alternative Home that offers activities such as gardening and the pleasure of animals such as birds, cats and a regular visit from Tank the dog. We believe in keeping our elders involved with their daily activities to keep them active and enjoy their desired hobbies.

The facility accepts Medicare and Medicaid. Piner's Guest Home is a licensed care provider with the State of California. The California Department of Social Services provides a list of registered care providers in California.

PINER'S
Since 1946
The Piner family has dedicated itself to meeting the needs of our communities of the Napa Valley for three generations. Wendell and Fern Piner began their medical mission in 1946 when they were released from serving at Mare Island during WWII. Their initial areas of service were a nursing home and an ambulance service. It may seem strange to some how we have become what we are today, but each service is related in some way. Our nursing home (many now refer to this as "skilled nursing") evolved with the beginning of government regulation and expanded into our "guest" home (later to be called assisted living) when we added licensed nurses to our staff. Our patients needed oxygen and other medical equipment both in the nursing area and our ambulance operations. Our residents in our care also needed wheelchairs, crutches, etc. Because of theses needs the Piner's Medical Supply was born.

The story may go on, but the crucial thing that you can take away is no one else has our experience or commitment to our community. Our helpful staff is available at any time to assist you. Many of our competitors only exist to you over the phone and they have no staff that you can help you in person. In this time of confusing and frustrating medical insurance coverage, we can't see doing it any other way!

Biography

Walter Samuel Eberlein was born on 2 July 1919 in Dinuba, Tulare, California.1 He died on 9 April 2012, at age 92, in Redding, Shasta, California.1
Walter Eberlein
1919-2012
Apr 17, 2012

Walter Samuel Eberlein, 92, passed away on April 9, 2012, at his home with his family by his side. He was born on a farm in Dinuba, Calif., on July 2, 1919, to Jacob and Maria Eberlein. He lived for 19 years on the farm, along with his three brothers and five sisters, all of whom preceded him in death. At age 19, Walter left the farm and worked for several years as a landscaper.

In 1941, Walter joined the Army, where he spent four years working in the dental field. After his time in the Army, he put himself through school at Pacific Union College, Angwin, Calif., by working in a dental lab.

In 1954, Walter got into the insurance business with his friend Gil Bell. He worked with Safeco and Prudential before becoming a partner with Barker, Hollman and Eberlein in 1987. He retired in 2007.

In 1958, because he was such a good bowler, he was invited to be in a bowling tournament that lasted for days. Whatever Walter did, he did it with full heart and gusto.

In his early years, Walter loved to fly his airplane. He was full of adventure and was not afraid to try anything. Walter was very active in the St. Helena Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he was a member until his move to Redding.

After living in the Napa Valley, Walter and his wife, LaVanne (Cornwell), moved to Redding, Calif. Walter was able to pull his golf cart out of his garage, drive up to the green and golf for the past 10 years. He was an avid golfer. He had lots of family and friends whom he got to play a round with over the years.

Walter was such a loving, kind-hearted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many. His family meant a lot to him and he always enjoyed the time spent with them. He will be missed tremendously.

Walter is survived by his wife of 39 years, LaVanne; a son, Lonnie Slack (Jerri); four daughters, Shirley Kerwin Eberlein, Marlene Slack Bresee (Gene), Ronda Slack Schram (Richard), Kandi Thomas Barnett (Rick); 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.

A special thanks to Hospice of Redding, Calif. and all of those who helped with our dad’s care over the past few months.

Memorial service will be held on 4:30 p.m. on April 21, 2012, at St. Helena

Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1777 Main St., St. Helena. Arraignments are under the direction of Napa Valley Memorial Park Mortuary, Napa.
