John G WIntermute became Fresno Fire Chief after the 1909 resignation of Chief W C. Poison.

His reign as Police Chief for Fresno County saw the motorization of fire vehicles. During his time, the horse drawn pumpers were phased out as gasoline powered fire trucks became the norm. He was succeeded by W C Berkholtz in 1917 who continued with the modernization of fire vehicles.

John was convicted of "padding" his payroll as Chief in 1917, the reason he left the job, and agreed to restitution which bankrupted him.
