Biography

Viola Hazel Fontaine was born in 1893 in Montgomery County, Alabama.1 She and William Penick Richards were married on 20 January 1914 in San Francisco County, California.2 She died Yes.
Lived with her aunt Viola Elizabeth Wintemute and husband, Thomas Hunt before her marriage in 1914. Assume if her mother Ida did die at about the time of Hazel's birth, that could well be a reason for the baby to be taken in by her aunt who has apparently raised her.

Pedigree Link

Biography

William Penick Richards was born on 19 January 1888 in Richmond, Virginia.1 He and Viola Hazel Fontaine were married on 20 January 1914 in San Francisco County, California.1 He was married on 29 September 1917.2 He died on 1 August 1953, at age 65, in Marin County, California, San Quentin Penitentiary.1
William was born on December 19, the son of William Presley Richards and Catherine Iola Penick, in Richmond Virginia.

His parents first moved on to Union City Tennessee, where William Sr. would pass on in 1908. Catherine then made her way with the children to California.

Records show that William first married Viola Hazel Fontaine in San Francisco on 20 January 1914, the daughter of John Beall Fontaine and Ida Adell Wintermute.

On June 5 1917, William registered for the military draft. At that time, he was 29 years old, single, and supporting his mother and a young sister by working on farms and selling autos. He and the family [his father was deceased] lived at 410 5th Street in Marysville California.

William next married Effie Augusta Hahn on 29 September 1917 in Yuba,? California, the daughter of William F. Hahn and Mary A. Tarke.

In 1920, William and Effie are found living in Klamath Falls Oregon. They owned a fruit farm and operated a motel there.

It is apparently true that William robbed the Woodland Bank of Italy in Sutter County, CA on September 29, 1924. The federal census of 1940 reveals him in the penitentiary at Leavenworth Kansas. His marital status is "divorced".

William died on 01 August 1953 in Marin County, California, which is the location of San Quentin penitentiary. He may have passed on while serving his sentence there.2
