Biography

Maynard Daniel Cornell was born on 5 March 1929 in Leslie, Ingham, Michigan. He died on 16 February 2013, at age 83, in Lansing, Ingham, Michigan. He was buried in East Lawn Memory Gardens, Okemos, Ingham, Michigan.
Maynard Daniel Cornell was a Pipefitter in Oldsmobile. Maynard, 83, passed away at home on February 16, 2013, just 2 1/2 weeks before his 84th birthday. He was born to Lloyd O. Cornell and Rachel E. (re) Cornell.

He grew up during renouned times of hardship, and started working at the age of 10. At age 13, he went to work for the railroad, and was proud that his hard work earned him respect from his adult co-workers. Maynard was a very strong man and hard worker all his life.

He hired in at Oldsmobile before enlisting in the Army in 1949 to serve in the Korean War. Discharged in 1952, he returned to work at Oldsmobile and soon met and married his loving wife of 60 years, Ann Marie Utz.

Ann and Maynard started their family right away, but the kindness and compassion that his parents showed to the hungry and homeless during the Great Depression made him want to do something for people who had less, so they became foster parents to more than 17 children during the 1960's .

During Maynard's career at Oldsmobile he became a skilled trades worker as a journey man pipefitter. He retired in 1978, after 31 years at Olds.

After exploring the Gulf states, by the second winter of retirement, May-nard and Ann decided to make Tucson, Arizona their winter home for the next 33 years. Out in the desert he panned for gold. In the city, he played bridge, and made an occasonal jaunt to the casino. For many years they attended the Amphi Bible Church, where each year Maynard grew a beard to play the role of James at the Last Supper re-enactment.

Maynard was generous to those in need, and a good neighbor. He actively served the Northtown Neighborhood Association and Friends of Bancroft Park for decades.

Maynard had many dear friends at the Lansing First United Brethren church over the years. In recent months, Maynard enjoyed playing Wednesday bridge at Letts Community Center.

Maynard was a gardener, proud of his twin silver maples, his irises and his immaculately hand-weeded lawn. He particularly loved the scent of his lavender-colored irises, and he liked growing tomatoes, sometimes get ting more than 100 tomatoes from a single plant.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make others laugh. Family and friends enjoyed his teriyaki pork cookouts, and he always made time to play with the children. He renamed many of the children over the years, calling the boys "George" and the girls "Georgette".

Over the summers Maynard enjoyed his grandchildren and neighborhood children, playing card games with them and taking secret trips to McDonald s well past bed time. He taught many children how to tie their shoes and how to fix their own bicycles. In later life he dearly loved his great grandchildren, just holding them, or squirting them with water toys t o make them laugh.

Maynard's parents preceded him in death, as did his brothers, Lloyd Junior, Melvin, Nelson, David and Kenneth, and his sisters, Beulah Reese and Lorna Stuart.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Ann, and his precious children, Jeffrey , Jennifer, Melanie (Harvey) Bond, Cynthia, and his sweetheart, Maya, the dog. His much adored grandchidlren are Meilani Williams, Jamie Williams, and Daniel Bond. He delighted so much in his great grandchildrlen, Q i'Airra, Davon, Kamarri, Kameia, and Corinne. Also surviving their brother are his very dear sisters, Lillian Ellsworth, Rosie Robins, and Alice Hodges, and his dear siblings-in-law, Edwarda Ann Cornell, Doris Carter, Jean Burns, Grace Utz, Paul and Judie Utz, Dean and Loretta Utz, David Utz and Carlton and Gail Utz.

During the last spring in Tucson they adopted the little 12 year old dog named Maya, who was his faithful friend and companion over the final year of Maynard's life. They loved and adored each other.

A memorial service with military honors was held Saturday, April 13, at the Eden United Brethren Church. A luncheon followed the service.
