Mary E. Wintermute Kent of Hurley, a long time teacher and advocate for persons having difficulty with the complexities in life, died unexpectedly in Kingston on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011. Born Dec. 29, 1922 in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of Jennie and Walter Wintermute. A member of the board of the Ulster County Association for Retarded Citizens, she received am award for distinguished service for special children and later the Ulster-Greene ARC's Jack Deyo Award for Outstanding Advocacy, an award recognized in a letter from Presidnet Clinton. A former member of the Ulster County Community Services Board and of the "New Horizons" board in Dutchess County, she also edited the New York State Newsletter for teachers of the handicapped. A Girl Scout leader in several towns, including New Paltz, former chairman of the Ulster County Special Olympics in Hurley, she was also an active member and president of the Hurley Reformed Church Women's Guild and headed the Stone House Day Committee for the church. After retirement she continued to volunteer with special education classes and Hurley's Ernest C. Myer School, and for many years served on the guardianship committee of Ulster-Greene ARC.She is survived by her husband, James Don Kent of Hurley; seven children, James (Michele) and Rebecca (Allan) Masters of Mass., David of Maynooth, Ireland, Linda of Saugerties, Lori (Daniel) Rothman of Sterling, Va.; nine grandchildren, Halissa and Alex Delphin, Katherine, Leon and Lily Kent, Elizabeth Wilson, Charlotte, Margaret and Donald Rothman; she is also survived by a brother, Orval Wintermute of Durham, N.C., numerous nieces and nephews as well as countless loving friends. Two sisters, Ella and Annie and a brother John predeceased her. A brief memorial service will be held at Hurley Reformed Church, Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at 4 p.m., followed by a "party" as she said, in the church hall. The family suggests that people attending wear something green, Mary's favorite color. Friends will be received at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Avenue, Kingston from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ulter-Greene ARC, the Hurley Reformed Church, or a charity of one's choice.

2 Rev. John B. Wintermute, 91, of Selmer departed this life on Sunday, October 3, 2009, in Jackson TN. Born in Memphis, TN, on December 27, 1917, and raised in Scranton, PA, and Wimmers, PA, he was the son of the late Walter and Jennie Mitchell Wintermute. He was a graduate of Maryville College in Tennessee and McCormick Seminary in Chicago, IL. Rev. Wintermute was a retired United Presbyterian USA minister with pastorates in Selmer and Savannah, TN, as well as in Chicago, IL, Las Animas, CO, Kansas City, KS, and Rocky Ford, CO. He was married to Miriam Berst Wintermute for 62 years until her death in 2004. Survivors are his daughters, Wendy Wintermute (Lawrence Harman) of Albuquerque, NM, and Katie Wintermute of Selmer; his sons, Steve Wintermute (Janice) of Kingsport, TN, Tim Wintermute (Kathie Sutcliffe) of Ann Arbor, MI, and Will Wintermute (Leslie Hurst) of Selmer; a brother. Orval (Joy) Wintermute, and sisters Ella Seidel and Mary (Don) Kent; 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. His sister, Annie Williams, preceded him in death. Rev. Wintermute was involved in numerous community activities while pastoring in Selmer and Savannah. He was a published playwright and artist. His sanctuary plays and stories and his candlelight Christmas Eve services will be remembered by many. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 11, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church in Selmer, TN. A memorial service will follow at the church at 3:00 PM with his niece Rev. Ruth Kent officiating. Assisting at the service will be Rev. Dr. James Jones and Mr. Allen Cherry. The family request memorial contributions be made to the charity of each individual's choice. Robert died January 6, 1998 inBillings, Yellowstone county, Montana at the age of 67. The accounting firm, Wintermute and Associates, that he owned had just merged with another firm and was final on January 1st. He wanted to stay active in the business but did want a little less work. The Dr. said he died of heart failure. Robert married Dorothy Mae Jorgenson of Sidney, Montana on May 16, 1954. Robert and Dorothy were the parents of two children, Debra Lynn and Roger Lee. Robert was a Certified Public Accountant and he and his wife resided in Miles City, Montana.
Robert and his sister Joyce Wintermute McGraw spent time together the summer of July 1997, when Joyce went to her class reunion in Fairview, Montana. He always came that 300 miles when Joyce was in Montana. Joyce and Robert were also able to spend time with family from Beach, North Dakota. (Vera Nielson-daughter of Grace Wintermute Meech- and her son LaVerne) who came for the day. Robert's sister's two children and Robert's brother-in-law (Joe Fisher) also joined the family. Class reunion's are always scheduled during the "Old Timer"s Festival" which has been going for some 40 years.
