Rose Evelyn (Stymacks) Wintermute
Cedar Knolls
Rose Evelyn (Stymacks) Wintermute, born Jan. 1, 1921 in Chatham Township, NJ. She was the ninth child born to Thomas J.C. Stymacks and Amie (Scheidermann) Stymacks. She was a life-long resident of Cedar Knolls, NJ living in the same home she and her husband built by hand in 1939.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Josiah S. Wintermute Sr. in 1975, a daughter, Lois Jane in 1962, and a son, Jeffrey R. Wintermute in 1985. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Laura Kautzmann and her great-grandson Michael Kautzmann. She was the last one remaining of her siblings. She is survived by her nine children, William Wintermute, Jean Kautzmann, Janet Henderson, Marie Farley, Patricia Nemeth, Kathleen Weidele, Josiah Wintermute Jr., John Wintermute and Cindy Eckhoff. Rose was the loving mother of 11 children, 29 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great- grandchildren. She also had numerous step-grandchildren that she loved as her own.
One of her greatest joys in life was helping and watching her grandchildren grow. For many years until she could no longer do it, she remembered every single one with a Christmas card and a few dollars. A smile would come to her face whenever she received a picture, a phone call or a visit. All of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss her dearly. Rose not only raised her own children but she was very proud to have taken in and helped so many young people over the years, not just family but friends too. Her home was always open and she was willing to lend a helping hand. She would give a hot meal, wash their clothes and make them get up and go to work or school. In her later years this was the single most important thing that she would reminisce about with great pride. Rose was also very proud to have worked at Foodtown in Cedar Knolls and Whippany for 25 years until her retirement in 1983. She is still fondly remembered by many employees and shoppers as "The Produce Lady." She was a very conscientious employee and would often walk to work from Cedar Knolls to the Whippany store when she did not have a ride. Rose was also an avid gardener, planting and raising vegetables to not only feed the family but to share with others. Many a day she spent digging, planting, weeding and harvesting. Her hard work always gave her a great sense of accomplishment. Rose was a member of Hildale Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Knolls. She was active in the choir for many years, and later was active in the Sewing and Craft group. She would volunteer at fundraisers and help in the kitchen at social events. She enjoyed her many friends at the Church and enjoyed helping in any way she was able.
There will be a visitation on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 11am to 1pm at the Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home 49 Whippany Rd in Whippany. A service will be held at 1pm.
