Frederick Wilson Hibbert, 84, passed away on November 30 due to complications from a hemorrhagic stroke suffered in September. A lifelong resident of Toledo, Fred was born to George Wilfrid and Gladys Harbage Hibbert. He graduated from Scott High School in 1948 and Ohio Wesleyan University in 1952, where, like his father, he was a proud member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. It was at Ohio Wesleyan, where he met the former Mary Dell Wintermute. They were married in 1954 in Newton Falls, Ohio and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last August.
After graduating from college, Fred was drafted into the army and served in the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart. Within a month of his discharge in 1954, he married, bought a house and began his career as a stockbroker. He began as an employee of Foster Bros. Weber and Company, eventually becoming a partner in the firm. The firm went through several buy-outs, and he retired in 2000. Over his 46-year career, Fred enjoyed great satisfaction and success advising his many loyal clients with his sound financial principles.
Fred had a life-long love affair with sailing, especially sailboat racing. Using his paper route money, he purchased his first sailboat when he was 12 years old. He continued sailing and racing until he was 82. He was a member of Toledo Yacht Club and a founding member of North Cape Yacht Club, serving as Commodore in 1983. He started the Sailing Club at Ohio Wesleyan University and did much to develop the sailing programs at Camp Storer and at North Cape. In the 1960’s and 70’s, his favorite boat was the Flying Dutchman, a high-performance, Olympic class, two-person racing boat. He owned many “FD’s” during this time and raced in regional and national regattas, often with one of his three daughters serving as crew. He was a great competitor and an exciting sailor. Fred served as the president of the national Flying Dutchman organization and worked to promote the class. Beginning in the 1980’s, he sailed keelboats and actively raced at North Cape on Lake Erie for many years.
When he could no longer race sailboats, he enjoyed playing pool and studying the game. He regularly played pool at the Maumee Senior Center.
Fred was a longtime member of Epworth United Methodist Church. As he was raising his family, he joined Zion United Methodist Church where he and Mary Dell were youth group leaders.
Fred was a proud member of Toledo Rotary and was President in 1974/75. Attending weekly Rotary meetings was a high priority. He was also actively involved in IYFR - International Yachting Fellowship of Rotary and served as Commodore of that group.
He was a longtime member of Toledo Post 335 American Legion and after his retirement, he greatly enjoyed becoming an active participant in Toledo Post activities including serving as Commander of Post 335.
Generously donating his time and talents, Fred served on boards or in leadership positions at Friendly Center, The Ability Center of Toledo, South Toledo YMCA, Epworth United Methodist Church and North Cape Yacht Club.
Fred was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he treasured time spent with his family. In addition to his wife, Mary Dell, left to cherish his memory are his three daughters: Nancy Hibbert and Helen (Phil) Kirk of Maumee, and Cindy (George) Smithy of Wellesley, Massachusetts; and seven grandchildren: Harrison and Dylan Schoettley (sons of Nancy and her former husband Scott Schoettley); Celesta, Nora and Leah Kirk; and Peter and Claire Smithy. His sister, Martha Boice of Centerville, Ohio, also survives him. In addition to his parents, his brother George Wilfrid Hibbert and sister Celesta Hibbert Hunter predeceased him.
Visitation will be on Friday December 5th from 5:00 until 7:00 at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH 43614. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, with Rev. Dr. Doug Damron of Epworth United Methodist officiating.
