Gazette of Terra Haute, Indiana
Jospeh R. Wintermute, the well known contractor, and one of our city's oldest inhabitants, died at 4:50 p.m. Saturday afternoon, September 22, 1895, at his home, 415 North Second Street, of apoplexy, after a short illness. He worked as usual Friday, was taken ill the next morning shortly after breakfast, and continued to grow worse until death relieved him. He came to Terra Haute when the city was a village, and being a carpenter, soon had a profitable trade. Many of the older buildings were built by him. His wife preceded him to the spirit world some sixteen years earlier. Of his four children, Mrs. Carlson, with whom he resided, was the only one living at the time of his death. He was one of the oldest members of Asbury M.E. Church, having united within one week after moving to Terra Haute in the latter part of 1854. Though not a wealthy man, he was always a liberal giver to the church. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Thursday November 3, 1910 [p. 1]
Emma Estella Hall, daughter of Hampton and Estella [Angeline Rosetta Travolia] Wintermute, was born near Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa, September 23, 1866, and died at the home of her brother, northeast of Bedford, Monday, October 31, 1910.
Her parents were among the early pioneers of this part of the state, of strong character, honest and sincere. The entire development of this county has been to them as an open book.
Although born of this sturdy parentage, Mrs. Hall had been practically an invalid for several years, while the best physicians the country affords could not help her to regain her health. A few weeks before her death she was stricken with paralysis and never recovered. The Master called her; she must obey.
She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, having united in 1895.
In 1907 she was married to Alfred [Pierson] Hall and to them were born two children, Acheah [Achsah] R. [uth] and Hampton T. [ravolia] Hall. She was born and grew to womanhood in this community, and here the most of her years have been spent. She leaves a large circle of friends, who join with her children, her aged father, the sister and brother to mourn her death, her mother having preceded her in death but a few weeks.
The funeral was held at the home of her father, H. [ampton] Wintermute, in east Bedford, at two o’clock p. m., November 2, conducted by the Rev. Fred Willis, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this city. The remains were laid to rest in Fairview cemetery.
