4 Funeral services for Everett G. Wintermute of El Reno will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glen Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the El Reno Cemetery.
Everett died Sept. 14, 2009, at Parkview Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was born July 8, 1921, in Calumet to his parents, Harry l. and Kathrine (Eimen) Wintermute. Everett grew up on a farm west of Calumet and attended Calumet High School. He also attended the California School of Banking at Berkeley University at Berkeley, Calif. Everett served four years with the U.S. Army during World War ll and was stationed in the Philippines and New Guinea area. During this period he spent 14 months in combat and received two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. On March 27, 1947, Everett married Alma Steerod in Oklahoma City and with the exception of a few years in California, they spent their married life in El Reno.
Everett was affiliated with banking for 36 years before retiring in 1984 as vice president of American Heritage Bank. He had been a member of the Oklahoma Bankers Association, American Institute of Banking, El Reno Chamber of Commerce and the Sheriff and Peace Officers Association of Oklahoma. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 382, American Legion Post 34 in El Reno and the Moose Lodge of Oklahoma City. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and in the past had served on the finance committee.
In the 1970's he and his wife owned and operated the Haymaker Motel in El Reno. After retiring from banking, he was employed by Ross Transportation in Oklahoma City for 15 years until 1999. He enjoyed transporting school buses throughout the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Clarence; and wife Alma. He is survived by a daughter, Vickie Baker of Enid; a grandson, Brian Baker of Oklahoma City; a great-grandson, Braeden Baker of Edmond; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Everett will be dearly misssed by family and friends who find comfort in knowing he is now at peace.
