Jack Vrooman Adopted by Uncle Manning
This is from my uncle Bob:

As a result of being abandoned by both parents, my father was adopted by his uncle Schuyler Manning and his wife Myrtle, who was an alcoholic. Manning, as he was called, probably drove her to drink. He had a mean streak. He liked to speed and, knowing this made Myrtle nervous, had the speedometer in his car altered to read slower. She never understood why the Packard always seemed to be going faster than indicated. According to Betty, Manning would wait until Sunday to wash his car just to irritate the church goers down the street. Someone told me that before he died he got baptized both as a Catholic and a Methodist just to cover both bases.

For some reason, Manning and Myrtle did not adopt Betty. Betty claimed that my dad was cute and she wasn’t. She was raised by Schuyler and his second wife, Anna Van Patten. Addie died in July 1915 and left Schuyler a small fortune. Manning and Myrtle changed my father’s name to Jack Schuyler Vrooman, and when Myrtle and Beatrice would get in their cups, they would argue about who was really Jack’s mother. My father tried to avoid both of them, and this would eventually cause my mother to divorce him when the burden of dealing with Beatrice was put on her. I kind of remember Myrtle keeping a bottle behind the drapes, but it is really not clear if that is a memory or something that I was told. Jerry, however, once moved the drapes and discovered the bottle to Myrtle’s displeasure..

As often happens Manning and Myrtle, who had been childless to that point, had a son, Gordon, after they adopted my father. .

Beatrice and Manning had a brother named Philo William. He was drafted and sent to France during World War I where, according to Betty, he died of pneumonia. This was during the influenza pandemic of 1918 that killed an estimated 40 million people world wide. It is hard to believe that he wasn’t a victim of that pandemic.
