Bottenberg, Mary Kay
Mary Kay Bottenberg, 87, formerly of Kansas City, MO, died Friday, October 22, 2004, at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg. The funeral will be at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Funeral Home at Blue Ridge and Gregory Blvd., Saturday, October 30, at 2 p.m.; with burial at Floral Hills Cemetery. Visitation will precede the funeral at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Broadway United Methodist Church, 406 W. 74th, K.C., MO 64414 or The Shepherd Center at 5200 Oak, K.C., MO.
Mary Kay was born May 24, 1917, in Kansas City, MO. She spent all but the last 17 months living in the Waldo area of Kansas City. She was currently living at Harmony Gardens in Warrensburg, near her niece, Carol Perry Davis. She graduated from Southwest High School in 1934, attended Kansas City Junior College, Kansas City Teachers College, then graduated from Missouri University. While at M.U., she was initiated into the Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Sorority. She married Louis M. Bottenberg at Broadway United Methodist Church on Thanksgiving Day, 1956. He predeceased her July 17, 1981, in the Sky Walk collapse at the Hyatt Regency.
Mary Kay worked as a secretary in the administrative offices of the Kansas City, MO, School District, then taught third grade for many years at George B. Longan Elementary School. She retired as a teacher from the William A. Knotts Elementary School in May of 1981. Mary Kay and her late husband, Louis Bottenberg, were active members of the Broadway United Methodist Church, its choir, the Inquirers Sunday School Class, and O.K. Club. They were also active in the Burroughs Club, an affiliate of the National Audubon Society, which met at Swope Park and a group that was interested in saving the tallgrass prairie. They were musicians and clog dancers at Old Missouri Town, 1855 near Lake Jacomo and were supporters of the town's continuation. They also were dance instructors in the continuing educational classes at The Shepherd Center at Central United Methodist Church in K.C. Mary Kay continued to teach line dancing there until 2000. For many years, Mary Kay was an active member of the Woman's City Club and its Hospital Committee, where she knitted hundreds of hats for newborns at Truman Medical Center. She was a member of the Sarah Boone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in K.C.
She was predeceased by her husband, Louis; her parents, Charles W. and Julian Hess; her sister, Miriam Hess Perry; and a brother, Charles W. Hess, Jr., and one niece, Julia Bottenberg Greer. She is survived by a sisterin-law, Mary Anne Hess of Kansas City; a brother-in-law, William Bottenberg and his wife, Mary, of Redlands, CA; five nieces and nine nephews and their families.
