1 Florayne “Flo” Karnes, 72, of Pekin, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2012, at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.
She was born July 2, 1939, in Raymondville, Mo., to Claude A. and Viola V. Vanderbur LaBee. She was preceded in death by her parents. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, seven sisters, two granddaughters and one grandson.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Hazlett of Osage Beach, Mo.; two sons, Robert (June) Karnes of Pekin and Mark Karnes of Osage Beach, Mo.; a stepson, Billy Ashby of Pekin; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Marion) LaBee of Elkland, Mo.; two sisters, Shirley (John) Gottstein of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., and Berniece Benassi of Springfield, Mo.
Flo graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree.
She worked as the housekeeping supervisor for Pekin Hospital for 20 years. She later worked for Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin, retiring in 2007.
A gambling enthusiast, Flo also loved to play bingo. She was a published poet, winning awards for her poetry. She also enjoyed hiking, gardening and spending time outdoors.
A celebration of life service will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Springlake Park in rural Manito. Burial of cremated remains will be held at a later date at Antioch Cemetery in Hartshorn, Mo. Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin is in charge of arrangements.
