Robert James "Buck" Mallary
April 19, 2011
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. - On the morning of Saturday, April 16, 2011, Robert James "Buck" Mallary, 78, ended his battle with Alzheimer's disease, one day shy of his 58th wedding anniversary.
He was born on Aug. 31, 1932, to Harold and Marlys Mallary in Iowa, the eldest of four children.
Buck was a Golden Gloves heavyweight boxer in Iowa and served in the U.S. Navy. On April 17, 1953, Buck married the love of his life, Marilyn LaVere Carr, and together they raised seven children in a home filled with love, compassion and faith.
He was an over-the-road trucker for many years and fell in love with Montana during his many trips to the state. In 1970, he moved his family to Montana, where he began his career as a Teamster fighting for workers' rights. Buck made the local paper in the late 1970s in Missoula after being savagely attacked while picketing a trucking company. It took six men but they finally beat him. Upon recovery, he returned to the picket line. If you enjoy work safety and benefits, thank a Teamster.
Buck resided in Missoula for over 35 years and Billings for five before moving with his wife to Guntersville. He was an honorable man who loved his family and stood firm for his beliefs.
Buck is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Yvonne Lusk; two sons, Dennis J. and Ivan P. Mallary; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Mallary.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Mallary of Guntersville; sister Cheryl (Jess) Paxton of Mansfield, Mo.; brother Ronald Mallary of Custer, S.D.; his children, Gwendolyne (Wayne) Johnson of Lawton, Okla., Lynette (Wayne) Englishbee of Anchorage, Alaska, Roblyn (Michael) Stalder of Lander, Wyo., Douglas (Brenda) Mallary of Santa Fe, N.M., Elizabeth (Robert) Handley of North Bend, Ore., and Joshua Mallary of Billings; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and the family plan a graveside service in late May in Iowa.
We love and miss you, Husband, Daddy, Grandpa, Bompa, Pop-pop.
