Cecil worked in Malvern with his father at Moline Plow and Lumber Co. until he was 16 and then he enlisted in the Army (telling them he was 18) on 13 Jun 1924. He was sent to Corrigador in the Philippines where he was assigned to the Second Observation Squadron and worked on airplanes and did photo work. One of his most important jobs was baby sitting the two daughters of his Commanding Officer, Lt. Walter K. Burgess. He returned to San Francisco in Jun 1928 where he was assigned to the 15th Photo Section at Precidio (Crissey Field), CA. On 12 Jun 1927, he was discharged and returned to AR, on a motorcycle.

Cecil went north and Clarence followed, where they both got jobs in Hutchinson, KS, where Cecil met Luella Elvira Higgins Cecil got a job in Beaver, OK. He came back to Hutchinson one night about a month later and he and Luella were married. They both went to Beaver, OK until the pipeline work was finished. They returned to Hutchinson until the same company hired him for a pipeline job in Muscatine, IA. As soon as he saved enough money he sent for Luella. They then moved to Rock Island, IL until the job was finished, then returned to Hutchinson where their daughter, Grace Maryee was born.

Cecil worked picking apples or doing anything he could get, this was during the depression and times were very hard. Cecil, Luella, Grace Maryee and his father Clarence moved to Lonoke, AR and lived in James Alford's old house - Bessie and the girls moved back to Malvern where Bessie worked for another doctor. Cecil and Luella worked in the cotton fields in Lonoke and Luella told the story about hoeing cotton for 50 cents a day. She would lay Grace Maryee under a tree, in the shade, while they hoed. Cecil's sisters came to Lonoke to work during the summer and Bessie stayed in Malvern. The girls then cared for
Grace Maryee. Luella told the story about Roy Nelson (Leta Mae's husband), he was making "Moonshine" and she was scared so he made her put wood on the fire to involve her so she wouldn't tell anyone.

In 1932, Cecil went to California riding a freight train. Luella's aunt Elva sent her the money to help pay her way to CA. Luella, Grace (Cecil's sister) and Grace Maryee drove to CA in Sep 1932 with a fellow from Malvern - sharing expenses. They lived in Santa Barbara, then moved to Wilmington where Cecil worked for Patten Blinn Lumber Co., then for Coast Cannery. He was then hired to work on the Metropolitan Aquaduct and they moved to Rice, CA. There they lived in tents, a concrete building with small apartments and finally they were
able to rent a filling station (which Luella ran) with a house that went with it, made of Sheet Rock. This house was one of the nicest in the town.

In Rice, Cecil's love for airplanes really flourished. He bought an old Eagle Rock (a bi-winged airplane). I can remember one of my first flights - it was in an autogiro (similar to a helicopter, but with wings) and it was at night. I remember looking down and seeing the shadows of people moving around in their tents.

When the aquaduct work was completed, after about 3 years, we moved to the Los Angeles area, living in Compton, Bellvedere Gardens and City Terrace. Cecil worked for the Bevis Equipment Co. and then on the Federal Building in Los Angeles (to this day every time I see a picture of it I point to it and say "my dad built that"). Of course, Cecil was flying and we spent every weekend at the airport. The following was published in the LA Newspaper in 1939 and Cecil and Luella were furious:

"MYSTERY PLANE FOUND, Abandoned in Field Near Whittier"
Aerial dope smugglers?
Aerial outlaws?
Aerial murder mystery?

Discovery of a mysteriously abandoned airplane yesterday in a field west of Van Norman road, a mile south of Whittier boulevard, presented those sinister possibilities to authorities.

In perfect flying condition and with the gasoline tank nearly filled, the mystery ship - a shiny, late-model two-place monoplane, with a green fuselage and silver wings - was found by Earl Park, Van Norman road rancher.

The rudder and wings bore the numerals "4639" - but the Department of Commerce prefix assigned to all licensed aircraft was absent.

According to Bureau of Air Commerce records, the plane was registered to James Miller and Bill Wright, 917 Superba avenue, Venice, but was believed sold last year to Cecil A. High of Rice, California.

Cecil had his plane on property belonging to a friend of his who flew with him. The newspaper printed a retraction but it appeared on page 14 and consisted of 2 lines whereas this article had made the front page!

Cecil applied for a position in Canada, as a Flight instructor, and he was all but hired when they found out he was color blind. This was his one really big regret during his life time.

Cecil and Luella built a home in Alhambra, CA which Cecil never got to live in. He had been hired by the Nevada Construction Co., to work on the Third Locks for the Panama Canal Company. Luella and Grace Maryee moved into the new house and spent two weeks in it before being notified that they had to catch a boat (the last which would be allowed to disembark passengers because of World War II). They flew from Los Angeles to Miami, FL on a plane that had bunk beds and on arriving there found the ship had left and it was necessary to fly to Havana, Cuba to catch it. They caught the boat in Havana and because
of the War it was blacked out at night and there was constant surveillance for enemy submarines. It was a very rough trip with several women and children ending up piled on top of each other in the dining room and dishes all over the floor!

First they lived in Gamboa, Canal Zone, then Cocoli, then back to Gamboa. Then the job on the Third Locks was canceled because of the War, but Cecil and Luella decided they wanted to stay in Panama. Cecil was a welder and got a position with the Army Engineers and they moved back to Cocoli and then Ft. Kobbe (Howard Air Force Base). After a few years he decided to start his own construction company. Luella was working at the Panama Canal Commissary in Cocoli.

Cecil, Jr. was born - what an ugly baby! He had yellow jaundice in the hospital and his skin and eyes were yellow and he was peeling when he was brought home.

Cecil had started his company in 1946 and Luella went to work for the Army as a telephone operator, but the Army decided they could no longer live on the base so they moved to the San Francisco de la Caleta in the Republic of Panama. Luella was hired by the Air Force in the Supply & Fiscal Division at Albrook AFB.

In San Francisco de la Caleta we were just a couple of miles from the Pitilla Airport, and Cecil now owned a BT-13a airplane. All their weekends were spent there and on Grace Maryee's 16th birthday, she received a Piper Cub as her present and she soloed a couple of months later.

In 1948, Cecil had a plane accident.

Cecil Jr., didn't look too bad anymore except for his ears which stuck out - Grace Maryee used to tape them to his head in the hopes they'd flatten out. He finally grew into them! He was a pretty nice kid, speaking Spanish better than English (due to Spanish speaking maids and playmates) - he even talked in his sleep in Spanish. The first time Russell Lawrence came to their home, to take Grace Maryee out, Cecil Jr ran up and grabbed his leg and bit him on the thigh.

Cecil's business was going well and Luella was promoted to Supervisor. They built a beautiful home in Las Cumbres, Republic of Panama. Cecil retired in 1970 and they opened a Ceramic shop in Panama. Luella retired in 1973 and they moved to Dothan, AL, which they loved. Cecil joined the Civil Air Patrol and held the rank of lst Lt and was Asst. Commander of the Squadron. Because of several heart attacks, he had lost his FAA license, which really didn't slow him down much. Although he could no longer pilot a plane by himself - there was always someone who he could fly with - and he spent more time in the air than on the ground. Luella joined the Garden Club and they were active in their church. They made several trips to AR and one to WA and attended ALL the air shows in AL and adjoining states.

Luella came down with Sarcadosis (a lung disease) a few years after moving to Dothan, then Cecil had two heart attacks and after the last one - 5 by-passes. Then Luella came down with TB and fell and broke her hip. Her lungs were badly scarred and she was never able to do anything much after that, not even prepare meals.

In Nov, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with over 60 friends and family and really enjoyed it.

Cecil had a double plus garage built and started building an airplane in it, with a couple of friends and was still working on it shortly before he died. There are few people who enjoyed life as much as he did - every moment was precious to him.

Jewell Virginia High
30 November 1919 - 22 January 1989

Jewell (Aunt Doodle to me, and Doodle BUG when I was unhappy with her) lived with us for a short time as a teenager. At that time we were living in Rice, CA. Glen Higgins, my mother's brother, also was living with us and they went around with each other until they met a sister and brother, George and Mildred Morris. Glen ended up marrying Mildred and Jewell married George. George was a very likable and fun person, unfortunately he had a serious problem which he was unable to overcome and it eventually led to their divorce in 1945. She then married Verne Williams and in about 1966, he just walked out, leaving Jewell and Pattie to fend for themselves. It was hard and they had a very rough time of it for years. Jewell fell and broke her leg in the Cafeteria where she worked, the leg never healed and eventually had to be amputated above the knee. Although it caused her a great deal of pain she was always a very cheerful and fun person.

Jewell married Glen Higgins in 1970 (who had divorced Mildred, and one or two others). They lived in Colton, CA, where Glen worked as a heavy equipment operator until he retired in 1978. They then moved to Warsaw, MO for about 3 years and then to Grants Pass, OR which they really loved. They had a good life there and with each other for 19 years. Although I'm sure they had their ups and downs, I think both of them were happier and more content with their life together than they had ever been.

George worked in the Commissary at Parker Dam and then he and Glenn Higgins worked at Boulder Dam, Nevada, living in Boulder City. His sister Earline wrote that she remembered spending Thanksgiving with George and Jewell in Boulder City.

Buried 1 Dec 1992 * in Hawthorne Memorial Gardens, Grants Pass, OR.
George is buried at Parker Cemetery in Parker, AZ.
