Nancy Houck Mills

MARION - Nancy Houck Mills passed away peacefully at her home in Marion on June 18, 2007.

Born Nancy Jane Houck on March 14, 1922, in Nappanee, Ind., she was the eldest daughter of John Lynn Houck and Charlotte Cool of Ypsilanti, Mich.

Nancy attended Michigan State Normal College where she worked as a laboratory technician in the University Health Services. During her studies she met Dr. Richard Ward Mills Jr., a Northwestern Medical school instructor in the Department of Internal Medicine.
She married Dr. Richard Ward Mills Jr. of Chicago, Ill., the only child of Richard Ward Mills Sr. and Grace Dorothy Brown on Jan. 4, 1950.

They moved to a small apartment at 355 1/2 Mount Vernon Avenue, Marion, in June of that same year where Dr. Mills joined the partnership at Frederick C. Smith Clinic.

Nancy assisted his private medical practice first on 320 W. Center St. in 1962, and at the new office building on 170 Fairfax Ave. from 1964 until his retirement in 1987. Her commitment brings meaning to the quote: "Behind every successful man is an even stronger women."

Nancy joined the Marion Medical Auxiliary and was president from 1966-1967.

She enjoyed "Ikebana" style flower arranging, interior decoration, swimming, scuba diving, alpine skiing, equestrian sports and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye. She was also a pilot who loved to fly the central Ohio region and cross-country. She made numerous excursions to the British and American Virgin Islands with her husband in the cockpit of their twin engine Beechcraft Baron, the N910 "Tango." She earned her twin-engine pilot's license and was a longtime member of the "Nintey Niners" Women's Pilot organization.

Nancy was a fearless woman with a zest for life that was truly inspiring to those who knew her. She was a remarkable individual who indeed had it all; she lived a wonderful, full life, traveled the world, had a husband who adored her and children who loved her more than words can ever describe. She was known by all as a caring, compassionate individual who instilled her love for nature in her children.

Let it be said of her, that in the end the measure of a woman is not only what she has acquired in life, but what she has given in return. As a loving housewife she nurtured her family and gave of her self without limitations. She gave to the medical profession as the wife of a physician (as only other such wives can possibly understand) and as patient in cancer research. Her gentle nature, grace, beauty and the lifetime of experiences will always be remembered, but her presence will indeed be truly missed.

She was preceded in passing by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Richard Ward Mills Jr. on Feb. 21, 2004, and her brother, Robert Houck, 1998, Ann Arbor, Mich. She is survived by her two sisters, Rachel McCormick, Brighton, Mich., and Dorothy Borgerson, Pendleton, Ore.; and her brother, William Houck, Decatur, Neb.; her daughter, Jennifer Jane Mills, Volcano, Hawaii; and her son, Richard Lynn Mills, and daughter-in-law Hanae Uechi Mills, Honolulu, Hawaii.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations be made to the Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation in Nancy Houck Mills' name.

Donations may be made by mailing your check or money order to: Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation, PO Box 374, Birmingham, MI 48102-0374m, or you may submit your donation online by logging on to www.clfoundation.org/donate/donate.htm

He was awarded the Certificate of Distinction for 50 years of medicine by the Ohio State Medical Association in 1992. He was a pioneer in bringing the first gastrointestinal scope to Marion and also helped shape the forces in local medical administration.

Dr. Richard Mills was a remarkable man who indeed had it all; he lived a wonderful, full life, had a loving and devoted wife and family, and a career he poured his life into.

He was an avid pilot with a multi-engine instrument rating who often flew across the country and also to the Caribbean. He enjoyed scuba diving, photography, cinematography, viticulture and loved Civil War history.

Let it be said of him, that the measure of a man is not only what he has acquired in life, but what he has given in return. As a physician he dedicated his life to the treatment and care of his many patients. His acute mind, sharp sense of humor, passion for life and the lifetime of experiences will always be remembered, but his presence will indeed be truly missed. He was a good man.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years Nancy Houck Mills, Marion, Ohio; his daughter, Jennifer Jane Mills, Volcano, Hawaii; and his son, Richard Lynn Mills, and daughter-in-law Hanae Uechi Mills, Honolulu, Hawaii.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully suggests donations be made in care of the Marion General Hospital, Pulmonary Care Department in Dr. Mills' name.

Norman Frank McCormick was born on 26 June 1923 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan.1 He and Racheal Joan Houck were married on 14 August 1948 in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw, Michigan.2 He died on 6 July 2010, at age 87, in Brighton, Livingston, Michigan.1

June 26, 1923 - July 06, 2010
Norman F. McCormick, of Brighton, formerly of West Bloomfield, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old.
Born in Detroit on June 26, 1923, he was the son of Roy and Helen (Kinney) McCormick. He graduated from De La Salle High School where he lettered in football and baseball. It was his pitching arm that got him on the Michigan State baseball team, where he was scouted by professional farm teams and the Detroit Tigers. At his brother's suggestion, he looked up Rachael Houck, a fellow student at Michigan State. After a fine courtship, on New Years Eve of 1947, he proposed to her. After graduation, he went to work with Ford Motor and hitch-hiked weekly between Detroit and East Lansing where his fiancé was still a student. They were married in front of the fireplace of her parents' home in Ypsilanti on August 14, 1948, settled in West Bloomfield where they made their home for 49 years and raised their family. Their up north home at Canada Creek Ranch near Atlanta was the center of many of the family's fondest memories.
After 33 years with Ford Motor, Norman retired in 1980 and worked as a consultant with Hedwin Corporation of West Bloomfield. He enjoyed his "partial retirement," as a scratch golfer and fellow traveler as he and Rachael accompanied their children and grandkids on Disney and Alaskan cruises. Watching the generations of his family rise up around him - teaching his children and grandchildren to hunt and fish, golf and play sports - he regarded as life's most precious gifts and the result of his long and happy marriage.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Rachael, and by their sons and daughters, Kathleen McCormick Schulz, Michael Scott (Jeanette) McCormick, Cheryl (Jim) McCormick Leach, Patrick Kevin (Sara) McCormick; grandchildren, Ian, Jeremy, Robben, Ann, Michael Jr., Kelly, Andrew, Ryan, Alex, Maggie; six great-grandchildren and a host of friends who join with the family in mourning his death and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
A Tribute To His Life will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 East Main St. in Brighton on Saturday, July 10, 2010, 11AM. Friends may gather beginning at 9:30 AM until the time of service.
