He was a whistler and a lover of the outdoors. He greatly enjoyed going into the huckleberry swamp near Inwood Lake to pick the berries. His daughter Charlotte insisted that while she was there with him that occasionally he would tell her to stay still because he could smell a rattlesnake. He would seek it out and kill it. George Carlson remembers that Howard collected blue racers to see which one was the longest.
He retired from his Romeo Rural Mail route after 30 years service, having started on May 15, 1903 when he used a horse and buggy..
