Charles E Space was the son of Benjamin Space and his wife, Vernette Dibble Space. Charles was a rural mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Department and lived at 92 W. Tioga Street in Tunkhannock, PA.

He was 85 years old at the time of his death which occurred at the Clarks Summit State Hospital in Newton Twp., Lackawanna Co, PA where he had been a patient for only 5 days.

Charles E. Space had been married three times. His first wife, along with their child, had died in childbirth. She was Mary F. Barham Space (1865-1898). She was the daughter of Henry Arthur Barham and his wife Margaret (House) Barham. The couple married on 13 Aug 1891 in Tunkhannock, with this announcement carried in the Wyoming Democrat Newspaper of 14 Aug 1891: "The wedding of our popular young merchant, Mr. Charles E. Space, to Miss Mary F., youngest daughter of H. A. Barham and wife, took place last evening at the residence of the bride's parents in the presence of immediate relatives, the ceremony being performed by Rev. J. H. Brown of the Presbyterian church. The happy couple will very sensibly forego the accustomed wedding trip and will at once commence house-keeping in a part of the Berlinghof residence at the corner of Bridge and Second Street.

His second wife was Adda Cook Space (1868-1922). She was 30 and had never been married, the daughter of Robert Clayton Cook and his wife Nancy Elizabeth (Armstrong) Cook. They married on 11 Apr 1899 with Rev James Ramey officiating, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania License #1650. Elizabeth Space Babcock died 8 Apr 1974 in Vineland, New Jersey. Her mother, Adda (Cook) Space was the first Worthy Matron of the local Chapter of Eastern Star and in 1933 her daughter, Elizabeth (Space) Babcock came from Bloomingdale, NJ to represent her mother as the first Worthy Matron. Mrs. Babcock carried on the tradition of Eastern Star (an affiliate of the Masonic Lodge) and was at that time the Grand Warder of the Grand Chapter of New Jersey.

Charles E. Space's third wife was Adah J. Welch Space (1872-1960) daughter of Jerome and Frances Ellen (LaBarr) Welch whom Charles married on 25 Oct 1934 when she was 62 years old. Adah (Welch) Space appears to have remained at home and was a caregiver to her parents. In addition, she was the proprietor of a Millinery Shop first located in the Bardwell Building and later in the Bunnell Building. Her home is listed as 17 Wyoming Avenue in Tunkhannock and she was a guest at the Marlatt Nursing Home on the corner of McCord and E. Tioga Street in Tunkhannock at the time of her death at age 87.

Biography

Samuel Donald Babcock was born on 26 August 1890 in Pompton, Passaic, New Jersey.2,3,4,5 He and Elizabeth (Betty) Cook Space were married about 1922.3 He died on 15 August 1964, at age 73, in Bloomingdale, Passaic, New Jersey.6,7 He was buried on 19 August 1964 in First Reformed Church Cemetery, Pompton Plains, Morris, New Jersey.6,7
Samuel Donald Babcock was a Paymaster- Pequance Rubber Company, Butler, Morris, New Jersey/ Borough Clerk.3,5,8 Samuel D. Babcock, clerk of this borough since it was incorporated in 1918, died Saturday at his home on Glenwild Avenue. He was 73 years old.

Mr. Babcock, who had undergone surgery for a lung condition three weeks ago, was being assisted down a flight of stairs by his sister when he collapsed and died in her arms.

Appointed by his uncle, the late Mayor Isaac DeLazier, Mr. Babcock had filled the post of borough clerk ever since. Always in good health, he had missed only three or four meetings until he underwent two operations on his eyes last year. In point of service, he was the dean of the state's municipal clerks.

He amassed a host of "firsts" over the years. He was the borough's first policeman, its first court clerk and was one of the founders of its fire department.

Born in Butler, Mr. Babcock had come with his family to Bloomingdale when he was three years old. He was educated in the local school system and later served six years as a member of the borough Board of Education.

He was employed by the Pequanoc Rubber Co. in Butler for over 30 years and served as its paymaster prior to his retirement.

Mr. Babcock was a member of Silentia Lodge, F & A.M., a member of the Eastern Star of Butler, a member of both the National and State Clerks Associations and president of the Passaic County Municipal Clerks Association.

Though Mr. Babcock was "Mr. Republican" of Bloomington, it was a Democratic mayor who gave him his fulltime job as borough clerk- 44 years after Mr. Babcock began his duties. It was in 1962 under Mayor Daniel Morse.

At the same time, Mr. Babcock became borough purchasing agent, another post he held until his death.

As borough clerk, he had administered the oath of office to every one of Bloomingdale's 11 mayors and more than 50 councilmen.

In addition to all his other activities, he also found time to serve-from 1922 to 1945- as the borough's first justice of the peace.

In his memory, Mayor Kenneth Mathews yesterday said he would proclaim an official period of mourning and the fire department, to which Mr. Babcock was so close, has draped its building.

Mr. Babcock is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Dr. Donald S. Babcock of Vineland; a brother, Ronald of Springfield, Mass.; a sister, Mrs. James Vanderbool of Bloomgdale and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday.
