William Maurice (Bill) Mayberry, age 85, of Beatrice, NE passed away Friday afternoon, January 5 at the Beatrice Good Samaritan Center. He was born on April 30,1921 at Oketo , Kansas to Charles Lester and Edna May (Brubaker) Mayberry.
He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1939.While attending high school he was a cheerleader, and also in Demolay. Upon graduating from high school he worked as a bookkeeper for two local grocery stores.
At the beginning of World War II after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, he and several Beatrice friends went to California to work in the war effort.He returned to Beatrice and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.He served his country as an airplane mechanic from September 25, 1942 until July 29, 1943.
He returned to California and studied photography at the Fred Archer School of Photography and was employed at a photographic studio in Hollywood , California . He enjoyed being a photographer whether it was doing portraits or photographing the great out of doors including National Parks.
Ballroom dancing was his passion and he attended Arthur Murray Dance School in California learning even more dances.He was such a good dancer that there were times when other couples would clear the floor just to watch he and his partner dance.
Music of all kinds and era's were his greatest pleasure in later years.He also spent many hours studying the Bible and other religious books.He smiled often and easily even though he was ill.He was very appreciative of the loving care provided him by the staff at Beatrice Good Samaritan Center.
He proudly attained 46 years of continuous membership in the American Legion Bitting-Norman Post #27, Beatrice , NE.
Survivors include his sister Shirley (Mayberry) Bratt of Beatrice NE, Nieces, Cindy (Bratt) Petersen and fiance Jeff Polage, Lincoln , NE , Shari Bratt, Lincoln , NE , and fiance Robbie Watts Richmond, VA. Alecia (Bratt) Stevens and husband Scott Stevens Beatrice, NE, nephew Bill Bratt and wife Julie (Maguire) Bratt Beatrice , NE. Great-niece, Amanda Stevens Lincoln, NE and her special friend Jared VanLaningham Lincoln, NE, Great-nephews Ryan Stevens, Alex Bratt, and Great-niece Alyssa Bratt, all of Beatrice, NE. First Cousins Phyllis Malone, Manhattan, KS, Carolyn Blakeway, Lynclen, WA, David Fiehtner Maryville, TN, Kenny Schank and wife Leona Schank.Loyal and faithful friends Dick Pelham, Horseshoe Bay, TX, Roger Aden, and Bill Goossen, both of Beatrice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lester and Edna May (Brubaker) Mayberry, grandparents William and Violet (Lester) Mayberry, grandmother Cynthia (DeLair) Brubaker Fearn, grandfather Nathan Brubaker, aunts, Myrle (Brubaker) Wood, Genevieve (Mayberry) Fiehtner, Ivah (Mayberry) Schank, Uncles Nelson Mayberry and Ernie Schank and brother-in-law Ray Bratt.He greatly mourned the death of his dear friend Willis Graham.
Funeral services will be held at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice NE, Wed. Jan. 10 at 1:30PM with Pastor Tony Cash officiating.Interment will be held at Evergreen Home Cemetery 's Memorial Section, Beatrice , NE. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Bitting-Norman Post #27 American Legion. The closed casket visitation will be Monday from 9-5:00 and Tuesday from 9-9 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice , NE. A memorial has been established to the Arthritis Foundation with Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge.Messages of condolence may be sent to rich@griffithshovendick.com. They will be forwarded to the family.
The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of the services.
