John J. Stover1,2
M, #60027, b. 29 March 1870, d. 3 June 1958
Biography
John J. Stover was born on 29 March 1870 in Erwinna, Bucks, Pennsylvania.
1,3,2 He and
Verga Ann (Virginia) Hillpot were married about 1910.
4 He died on 3 June 1958, at age 88, in Erwinna, Bucks, Pennsylvania.
1,3 He was buried in Point Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery (124), Point Pleasant, Bucks, Pennsylvania.
5 John J. Stover was an Operator-Stover Telephone Company. John J. Stover, of Erwinna, Bucks County, former operator of a gristmill and a telephone company, and a pioneer in the local development of electric power, died at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington, he was 88. John, the son of Jacob Stover and Mary Capner.
In recent years Mr. Stover had deeded more then 140 acres of land for community use by both Tinicum Township and Bucks County.
The Stover gristmill was established about 1830 by Mr. Stovers grandfather the late Henry Stover. The mill is located along the Delaware River, about a half mile south of Erwinna. The mill remained in operation until 1925. River water, turning a huge water wheel, supplied the power.
In 1901 Mr. Stover conceived the idea of harnessing the river to supply electricity. He installed a generator in the mill and began to erect transmission lines. However there was not enough public demand for the power and the project failed.
A year before Mr. Stover established the Stover Telephone Co., which served the Erwinna area until 1931. The company ran lines as far as Pipersville, where a connection was made with lines to Philadelphia.
After 1931 telephone service was discontinued for several years until the area was taken over by the Bucks United Telephone Co.
In 1955 Mr. Stover turned over 126 acres of land to the Bucks County Park Board to establish the first county owned park. The land included the house in which Mr. Stover lived, and two other dwellings. It was agreed that Mr. Stover would maintain his residence in the dwelling until his death. The Track was known as the John Stover County Park but is now known as Tinicum Park.
The old mill building was turned over to the Tinicum Township Improvement Association by John Stover in 1957. The building presently houses the township library, and is used as a museum.
Mr. Stover also deeded to the association 16 acres of river-bottom land owned in connection with the mill. The Stovers bought the land to keep their mill dam from being undermined by persons gathering cobble stones to be used to pave the streets of Philadelphia.
Mr. Stover was a charter member of the Delaware Valley Protective Association. He was a member of the Frenchtown Baptist Church.
During the August 1955 flood Mr. Stover refused to leave his home, even though it was completely surrounded by water. He stayed on in the dwelling afterward, despite the fact that one end was washed away by the floodwaters.
He had no children.
