Deafness Prevents Civil War Veteran Hearing Approach of Limited Interurban
"Hamilton M. Potter, aged Civil war veteran living at 394 Central avenue received injuries from which he died a short time later when he was struck by a Flint division interurban in Royal Oak Sunday evening at 6 o'clock. He died in Highland Park police patrol enroute to Grace hospital. Mr. Potter, who was 79 years of age, had been visiting relatives and started to board the car for Pontiac at the intersection of the Eight Mile Road and Woodward avenue. He was accompanied by his niece, Miss Emma Englard of 484 west High street, Detroit. He is said to have stepped ahead of his niece and directly in the path of the approaching limited which he appeared not to notice. Mr. Potter was slightly deaf.
The remains were brought here Monday afternoon and the funeral will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with Rev. A. E. Healey officiating and with burial in the Rochester cemetery.
Surviving Mr. Potter are his widow [Rosetta] and two daughters and a son."
Hamilton Potter enlisted at Pontiac on Jan 29 1864. He was 25 years old at the time of his enlistment. Rank at enlistment, Private. He enlisted in Company B, Michigan 5th Infantry Regiment. He was mustered out on May 9, 1865 at Wasthington, D.C.
