Things to remember about Mom:
Sarah R Robbins grew up in Kingston and graduated from the old Kingston High School in 1927. She was an excellent student, a varsity basketball player, a member of the debate team and a local area tennis champion.
She went on to study nursing at the Wyoming Valley Homeopathic Hospital with graduate work in pediatrics at the Philadelphia General Hospital. She went to work as a visiting nurse delivering care to the homebound and poor and delivered well over 100 babies at home during her working career.
She married Stanley Bunn on September 1, 1934 at the Arch St. Methodist Church in Philadelphia and they remained happily married for 59 years until his death in 1993. Her only son, Richard was born in 1936. During the early years they lived with Grandma Robbins, Ray, Emily and Sis Jones, and Harry, Bill and Jimmy Robbins on Landon Ave in Kingston. Since dad was a welder on construction work he traveled all over and the family also had short stays in Boston and Philadelphia. These were the depression years and times were tough. Her first real apartment was on Bennett St. Kingston behind Alles Jeep and the family moved to Luzerne in 1941 in time for Richard to go to School. In 1958 Richard married Sandy Gray from Forty-Fort and grandchildren Richard, Sue and David came along. And they in turn married and great grandchildren Jackie, Andrew Emily and Alexa came along.
In a very real sense her caring never stopped even though her work outside the home was much reduced after she married Stanley in 1934. She was dedicated to the well being of her family and others. She was the principal caregiver to Aunt Do, a sister of her father-in-law and a protector of the Bunn homestead on Bunker Hill. Her home was opened many times to people in need. On two separate occasions after fires on Main St. the victims came to live with the Bunns. During and after the devastating 1972 flood 12 people went to live with the Bunn's at Harvey's Lake. Her brothers, Harry and Jimmy lived with the Bunns at various times during their lives. And, there are many other caring acts.
She was active in the community and was always organizing something to make the place better. She was a volunteer aircraft observer and a board member of the Office of Price Administration during WWII. She was a founding member of the Marine Corp League Auxilliary. She folded bandages for the troops during the war. She organized fund drives for the March of Dimes which funded the research which ultimately eliminated Polio. She organized the first high school all night graduation for the class of '53 of Luzerne High School so that everyone would have a party to attend in a safe place. She was an active participant at the Luzerne Methodist Church and loved the Church Suppers and especially the making and canning of Plum Pudding at Christmas time. She remained a supporting member of the Luzerne Church until she moved to the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown in 1993.
She will always be remember for her open house especially to children. She loved parties. And she loved having people around and large family dinners. The taste of her apple pie, welsh cookies and Polish chicken …especially the apple pie…is remember by every one. She loved having the children around and making up and telling them stories…one of her favorite fictional characters was Humpter Dumpter who could do anything. And everyone remembers the first day of trout season at Harvey's Lake. The State would stock the lake about two weeks before opening day. Then every day for two weeks mom would drop corn around the dock so that come opening day the fish were trained to eat corn at the dock. We caught a lot of fish on opening day. Lots of kids caught their first fish off that dock. One of the kids, her grandniece Beverly Robbins, on one occasion pulled a fish from the lake and then screamed as the fish flopped on the deck…."It's alive, it's alive. I didn't know it was going to be alive." Mom loved fishing. And, in the winter, there was always ice skating on the lake and the hot chocolate that came with it.
Mom and dad were dedicated to each other. I would like to share one story for illustration. In March of 1981 dad was removing the bubbler system which protected the dock from heavy winter ice at Harvey's Lake. As luck would have it dad fell fully clothed including heavy boots into the freezing water…there was still ice on the lake. As luck would have it mom just happened by at that moment and as dad was struggling in the water which was about 12 ft deep she threw herself on the dock and grabbed the hood on his sweatshirt to keep him from going under. She screamed for help but no one heard. Dad was so cold by that time that he was of little help. Slowly she dragged dad around the edge of the dock toward the shallower water but by the time they got near shore dad had lost the use of his legs and couldn't get up the ladder or the steep slope. As luck would have it one of the floating chairs had not been put away for the winter and mom was able to grab it while holding on to dad and to get dad on to the floating chair. She then was able to float dad to the shallow water where he was able, with her help, to get out of the water. All told dad was in the water about 30 minutes. Later on she told me that if dad had gone under she would have jumped right in with him. I have no doubt that she would have. As a sequel, dad went to the house, took a hot bath, had some hot soup and about 3 hours later was back working on the dock.
