Father Lawrence Wildonger Jr., M.S.C., was born in Easton in the Diocese of Allentown on November 12, 1947 to Lawrence H. Sr. and Elizabeth (Walsh) Wildonger, both now deceased. He attend St. Jane Parochial School, Easton, after which his family moved to Nazareth and became member of Holy Family Parish. He attended both Nazareth Junior and Senior High schools, graduating in 1965. He entered Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa., from 1965-69, receiving a bachelors degree in political science. In 1973, Fr. Wildonger entered the novitiate of the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Shelby, Ohio, where he made his first temporary Profession of the Evangelical Vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience in 1974. He continued his studies at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, Ill., from 1975-79 and received the Master of Divinity degree. He professed his perpetual vows in 1978 and was ordained a priest by the Most Reverend James Timlin, D.D., in Nazareth on June 15, 1979. Father Wildongers first appointment was in the Diocese of Allentown as assistant chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital, Reading. In 1981, he was transferred to the Diocese of Rockford, where he was appointed parochial vicar at St. Marys Parish, Elgin, Ill., until his transfer to Sacred Heart Monastery, Aurora, Ill., in 1982. In 1983, he was assigned as parochial vicar at St. Joseph Parish, Upland, Calif., in the Diocese of San Bernardino. His duties included both parish and hospital related pastoral care, in accord with his past experience in these ministries. In 1990, he returned to the Diocese of Allentown and was appointed to the M.S.C. community in Reading, where he continued chaplaincy and ministry in the surrounding parishes and area hospitals. For reasons of health, Father Wildonger was assigned to Sacred Heart Villa, Center Valley, in the fall of 2000, where he resided until his death on June 1, 2008.
Services: Viewing will take place in the Reichel Funeral Homes Inc., 220 Washington Park, Nazareth on today, June 3, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held at 8 p.m. with Father Michael Camilli, M.S.C., supervisor of the Pennsylvania M.S.C. Community, as homilist. On Wednesday morning, June 4, 2008, a Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated in Holy Family Catholic Church, Nazareth at 11 a.m. with Father Raymond Diesbourg, M.S.C., vice provincial of the U.S.A. Province of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, as principal celebrant and Father Philip DeRea, M.S.C., as homilist.
Interment will take place at a later date in the parish mausoleum.
