Shirley Emiline Hughes, a resident of Mechanicsville, passed away on Sept. 21, 2009, after a two-year battle with endometrial cancer. She was 67.
She was the cherished wife of Merritt E. Hughes, passing away on their 47th anniversary.
Shirley also is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Lynne Hughes and her husband, Eric Sneddon, of Chalfont, and a son, David Scott Hughes of Mechanicsville.
Shirley was the daughter of the late Sylvester "Wes" Cook and the late Pearl Beck Cook of Mechanicsville.
Shirley graduated from the original Central Bucks High School, Class of 1959 and from Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1962. She worked at the hospital and in many fields of nursing, including private duty, nursing home and physicians' offices.
Mrs. Hughes was an avid gardener who belonged to the executive board of the Doylestown Nature Club. She was also a member of the Schmieder Arboretum of Delaware Valley College, the Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve and the Del Val Garden Group. In addition, she was instrumental in organizing the Bucks County Audubon Society's Annual Barns of Distinction Tour.
One of her favorite activities was camping on the family property in Shin Hollow, near Wellsboro in north central Pennsylvania, where many friends gathered around the campfire.
As a member of the Bucks County Historical Society and the Friends of the Historical Society, she loved antiques and was the founding president of Round Meadow Run Chapter of the Questers organization.
Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 25, at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown, where friends may call after 10 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow in Mechanicsville Cemetery.
In light of Shirley's love of flowers and gardening, if those attending the commital service would like, please bring a single flower from your own garden as a tribute.
