Dale Hart Pitke, 85, of Bremerton died Sunday at Harrison Hospital.
He was born in Gibbon, Neb., to George and Ceycle (Arbuckle) Pitke. He was raised and educated in Gibbon, where he enjoyed playing basketball. He graduated from high school there in 1937.
After graduation, he entered the Navy and served for 20 years, retiring in 1957. Mr. Pitke was the chief engineman on the USS Oklahoma and was on leave when the battleship was sunk at Pearl Harbor. He then served on the battleship USS Missouri before the Japanese signed their surrender aboard it at the end of World War II. He was an instructor and operating engineer during the construction of missile sites around Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane. He served on the USS Atka icebreaker during Operation Deep Freeze in 1956 and 1957.
On April 29, 1944, he married Imogene Armogost in Philsburgh, Kan.
After his Navy career, Mr. Pitke worked for Bremerton School District as a custodian, retiring in 1980.
He was a lifetime member of the Grand Lodge of AF & AM of Nebraska. He also enjoyed baseball, basketball and remodeling his home.
Survivors include his wife of the family home; a son, DeWayne Pitke of Bremerton; a brother, Ira Pitke of Portland, Ore.; and a granddaughter.
A funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, 5303 Kitsap Way, in Bremerton.
Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home.
