Master Sargent Ellsworth Eugene Burns, United States Army Retired, 84, of Pennsville, NJ, formerly of Palmerton, PA, passed away at home on January 1, 2013 after a brief illness.

Gene was born in Phillipsburg, NJ on November 12, 1928 the son of Robert Elmer Burns and Minnie Maude Burns nee Young.

He enlisted in the United States Army in February of 1946. He was stationed in Belgium where he met his beloved wife, Jenny Burns nee Maes. They married on January 20, 1949. During his 27 years in the Army, Gene was stationed in Belgium, England, France, Germany, Georgia, California, New Jersey and Texas, with his wife Jenny by his side. Gene also served in the Korean and Vietnamese Conflicts. Gene was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Silver Good Commendation Medal Two Knot Device, World War II Occupation Army Medal, Air Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Gene retired from the Army on August 1972.

Upon retirement from the Army, Gene worked at the New Jersey Zinc Company in Palmerton, PA. He left the zinc company to work as a Veterans' Service Coordinator for the State of Pennsylvania where he helped former veterans find permanent jobs. Gene was a hardworking man who took great pride in his wife and sons. He enjoyed talking about his years in the Army, especially the years in Europe. Although he was a career Army man, Gene always rooted for Navy during the annual Army/Navy football game.

Gene was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Jenny, who passed away in April 2011. He is survived by his son Robert and his wife Donna of Palm Bay, FL; his son Blaine and his wife Cheryl of Pennsville, NJ; his granddaughter, Jill and her husband Joe Dougherty of Allentown, PA; and his step grandsons, Steven Kresge of Franklin Township, Pa; Greg Kresge of Douglasville, Pa; and Tommy Kresge of Nazareth, Pa. Gene is also survived numerous extended family members in Pennsylvania and New England, and through his deceased wife Jenny, extended family members in Belgium and Canada.

Services will be at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC.

Jenny Burns 82, of Pennsville, NJ, formerly of Palmerton, PA, passed away at home surrounded by family on April 22, 2011 after a brief illness.

Jenny was born in Ans (Liege) Belgium on November 6, 1928. She was attending The College of Waha in Liege Belgium when she met Ellsworth Eugene "Gene"Burns who was stationed in Belgium with the United States Army. They married on January 20, 1949.

As an Army wife, Jenny lived with Gene in England, France, Germany, California and Texas. She enjoyed living in different places and making new friends. Over the years, Jenny traveled to Belgium to visit her family there and also welcomed family members from Belgium and Canada to her home in the United States.

Jenny is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ellsworth Eugene "Gene" Burns. She is also survived by her son Robert and his wife Donna of Palm Bay, FL, her son Blaine and his wife Cheryl of Pennsville, NJ and her granddaughter, Jill and her husband Joe Dougherty of Allentown, PA. She also leaves to cherish her memory, family members in PA, Canada and Belgium, as well as many friends in Belgium, France and throughout the United States.

He was born in Mauch Chunk, Pa. to the late Philip Joseph and Bessie Ethel (Burns) Stephan and predeceased by his devoted son Philip Roy Stephan.

He was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater Guadalcanal. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, DVA , and the American Legion. After his service in the military he drove truck for Yellow Freight Trucking and enjoyed sports especially horse racing and football. He is survived by his grandchildren: Malisse Stroble and husband Richard, Gregory A. Stephens, Todd Karvoski, and Reynado Figueroa. Great Grandchildren Brittany and husband Mark, Lauren, Alexis, Jared, and Evan. Great Grandchildren: Arianna, Austin, and Colton. Services: A viewing will be held on Saturday June 1st from 12:00 p.m. until a service at 1:00 p.m. at Weber Funeral Home 1619 Hamilton Street, in Alllentown. Jacob G. Hoffman, 84, of 2303 E. Woodlawn St., Allentown, a brakeman for the Central Railroad of New Jersey for many years until retiring, died Tuesday in Allentown Osteopathic Hospital.

He was the husbend of Barbara (Burns) Hoffman.

He was born in Germany.

Surviving besides his widow are a daughter Madelyn, wife of George A. Fahringer of Danielsville R.I.; a son Kenneth A. of Seattle; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Private services will be Friday at the convenience of the family in the Wm. W. Kulik Funeral Home, 426 Hanover Ave., Allentwn. Calling Hours will be 7-8 p.m. Thursday.
