Biography

Harry Lansing Wintemute was born on 9 September 1896 in New Westminster, Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 9 Sept. in 1901 census.1 He died on 13 December 1915, at age 19, in action in France. He was buried in Berks Cemetery Extension, Comines-Warneton Hainaut, Belgium.
Harry Lansing Wintemute was an Electrician. New Westminster Jan 4 That Harry Wintemute was instantly killed on December 13 by a German shell which landed on a dugout in which he and a number of others were resting is the information received by letter yesterday by his father, Alfred B. Wintemute, of this city from Walter F. Mortison, another New Westminster boy who is serving at the front with the 7th Canadian battalion. This supplemented the bare announcement of the casualty contained in the wire received a few days ago from the adjutant-general's department at Ottawa. Mortison assisted at the funeral, which was held by a Methodist chaplain right on the battlefront "somewhere in France," put a branch of leaves on the grave as a tribute to his dead comrade and then sat down and wrote the sad details to Pte Wintemute's parents.

Pte. Harry Lansing Wintemute was only 19 years of age, and a native son of New Westminster. He promptly enlisted at the outbreak of war and had served with the 7th battalion through all last summer's fighting without receiving a wound. He met instant death and did not suffer any. He was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Sexsmth of Eburne. On December 10 he wrote his parents acknowledging the receipt of a Christmas parcel.

A brother, Frank E. Wintemute, is serving in France with the Coldstream Guards, going over from New York at the outbreak of war to join this famous British regiment. HIs last letter home was written 30 feet under ground and right under the German trenches where the Coldstream pioneers were sapping. The two brothers had not met since joining the colors.
