WEDNESDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 20, 1895
DANGEROUSLY INJURED
-----------
A most serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon to Mr. John Wintemute, of the firm of Wintemute Bros. He was in the factory between 3:30 and 4 o'clock, examining some lumber. The ripsaw was running at the time, cutting maple boards, when a piece of board, 12 X 18 inches and an inch thick, "climbed" the saw, and being caught by the teeth, was hurled backward with tremendous force. Mr. Wintemute was standing thirty feet away, and happened to turn towards the saw just as the "climbing" incident occurred. The man operating the machine dodged in time, but Mr. Wintemute, not knowing what had happened, was unconscious of the danger and the heavy piece of wood struck him on the head just as he turned. He fell like a log, to all appearance dead.
The machinery was instantly stopped, and a messenger was sent for Dr. Hall, who hastened to the factory, and was by the side of the injured man within two minutesafter the accident occurred. Examination showed that the board had struck on the left side of the head, between the temple and the frontal bone, inflicting what is known in surgery as a "saucer" fracture of the skull; that is the bone of the skull was driven in, leaving a deep indentation without splintering the bone, although cracking it. The blow produced concussion of the brain. The scalp was badly torn in different directions, and stitching was required.
An hour after the accident, the injured man was removed to his home, still unconscious, and he remained in that condition until 9 o'clock this morning, since when he has been in a semi conscious state. Dr. Hall says the outlook for his recovery is hopeful, but uncertain.
