Private William H. Strawn, whose home is nine miles south of Belvidere near Kirkland, but who went from Belvidere in June, 1918 to Rockford to be mustered into the U.S. service, was discharged last week at Camp Grand and was here Saturday on his way home. He visited his brothers, Ralph, Charles, and Roy; sister, Mrs. Walter Weaver, and uncle, Ben Strawn. Private Strawn went from Rockford with the 86th division but was transferred to the 354th regiment, 89th division. He had been overseas since September and in the thick of the fighting, and with the army of occupatin since the armistice was signed. Theodore Strawn, father of Private Strong, is in a critical condition at the home near Kirkland from gangrene in one of his feet and legs and his survival for more than a short time is considered hopeless.

Mr. William H. Strawn, 85, 1203 S Main st. died at 4:40 pm Tuesday at St Joseph Hospital following an extended illness. He lived in the Belvidere area most of his life and was employed in the shipping department of the Nations Sewing Machine Company for 25 years. He was born in Dekalb County on Jun 26, 1889, the son of Theodore and Margaret McQuillian Strawn. On Oct 11 1919, he married Blanche Hyser in Sycamore. Mr. Strawn was a member of the John Hugo Kaiser VFW post 1461. He served in W. W. I In addition to his widow, Blanche, he is survived by one son, Herman of Mosinee, Wisconsin; one daughter, Helen Strawn, at home; one brother, Ralph, Belvidere, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Friday at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland funeral home. The Rev. Duane Heap of First United Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Gardens of Memories. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 pm Thursday.
