Mary was referred to as Mrs. Benjamin Haines. Benjamin died before the 1891 census when Mary was listed as a widow [Mary was a widow in the 1881 census].

Died: Mary died 27 August 1926 at Bayham Township (VRO #012440) (noted as being sick and unable to attend the Wintermute/Firby Reunion in June 1926) and living in Bayham (Richmond) at the time.
Buried: Plot 77, Richmond West Cemetery, Bayham.

Married: at age 19 on 29 May 1864 in Elgin County to Humphrey Johnston, son of Joseph Johnston and Barbara Kilmer, by Rev. David Griffin (ref St. Thomas Library Card file).
Humphrey was born 3 December 1840 in Malahide Township and died 19 March 1931 in Malahide Township and buried in Bethel Cemetery, [Watford, Warwick Township, Lambton County, Ontario].

Died: 10 November 1921 at Aylmer, Elgin County, ON.

Ellen Johnston, beloved wife of Humphrey Johnston, passed away at her home on Water Street, on Thursday last, November 10th. Deceased was in her 77th year and has been in poor health for many months, and for weeks was confined to her bed. Mrs. Johnston was born in Malahide township, being a daughter of the late Hiram (actually Abram) Wintermute. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston had been residents of Aylmer for the past seven years, coming here from Sarnia. Besides her husband, one son survives; John Johnston, of this place; also four brothers and four sisters; George, William and David Wintermute, of Malahide; Edward of Belmont; Mrs. Benjamin Haines, Malahide; Mrs. James Deerling, Flint, Mich,; Mrs. George Clark and Mrs. Eliza Scott, of Melvin, Mich. The funeral was held on Saturday, the 12th inst., at 10 o'clock a.m. and after the service the remains were taken to Bethel Cemetery, Watford for interment.

1. George N. Johnston [this might be George Noble Johnston], born April 1865, Malahide Township, Elgin Co. or Warwick Township, Lambton Co., died before 1921.
2. John A. Johnston, was born at Malahide Township, Elgin County, Ontario, 29 November 1866 and died at Memorial Hospital, St. Thomas, Ontario, 3 February 1949. He married (check marriage registrations) Martha E. Vanderhoof (or possibly Pace). She was born 1873 and died at Malahide Township, Elgin County, Ontario, 11 October 1925.
3. Ermina Johnston, born abt 1879 (age 1 in the 1880 census), Chase Township, Lake Co., Mich., died bef 1921.

They were in Warwick Township, Lambton County for the 1871 census.
For the 1880 U.S. census they were in Chase Township, Lake County, Mich.

- In the 1891 census of Malahide, Richard Edward, age 36, David, age 38, are shown as Farmers with brother Phillip age 52 as a farm labourer. Also with them was sister Mary “Hanes” (Haines), widow, age 49, and Mary’s son Philip “Haynes” (Haines), age 23, farm labourer. The next family listed in the census was William Wintermute

Referring to the 1851 census in the notes for his father Abraham, his age was given as 8 which would make his birth ca.1843.

Referring to the 1861 census in the notes for his father Abraham, it shows "age next birth day 13" which would make his birth ca.1849.

Referring to the 1871 census in the notes for his father Abraham, his age was given as 22 which would make his birth ca.1849.

In the 1880 U.S. census, Richard was living with the family of his sister Esther and husband George Clark in Genesee County, Michigan. He was 33 [b. abt 1847] at the time.

Referring to the 1891 census in the notes for his sister Mary Haines, his age was given as 36 which would make his birth ca.1845.

His birth based on the following death record [date of death March 1, 1898 at age 50] would be ca.1848.

Finally, referring to the transcription from Firby Cemetery, again in the notes for Abraham, at the time of his death, March 1, 1898, his age is inscribed on the marker as 48 yrs 4 mos 16 days. This would make his date of birth <14 November 1849>.
