HUMPHREY JOHNSTON
[Notes and obituaries provided by Bruce C. Johnson Jr. (Elgin OGS) December 1999]
Here is an extract of what I have in my Johnson Genealogy on Harriet Ellen (Wintermute) Johnston. She married in 1864 Humphrey Johnston who was son of Joseph who was son of Humphrey Johnson/Johnston the original settler from Ireland on the 9th Concession of Malahide.
Humphrey3 Johnston (Joseph2, Humphrey1) was born in Malahide Township, Elgin County, Ontario, 3 December 1840 and died probably near Aylmer, Ontario, 19 March 1931.
He married 29 May 1864, Harriett Ellen Wintermute, daughter of Abram and Elizabeth Lizzie (Kilmer) Wintermute (possibly a cousin or niece of husband's mother Barbara Kilmer) of Malahide Township. She was born at Malahide Township circa 29 January 1845 and died at Aylmer, Ontario, 10 November 1921, at age 76 years, 9 months and 11 days.[ ] The death registration for Ellen indicates that her mother was born at Malahide Township and her father was born in Germany (this is probably in error). She had lived in Aylmer for the past 6 years.
In 1871 at Warwick Township, Lambton County, Ontario (Div. 1, p. 70), is Humphery Johnston, 30, with his wife Ellen, 26. With them are children, George W (or N.), 6, John H., 3. He indicates that he is Irish and they are W. Methodists. They are living next to Traver? Crysler 45, wife, Paulina 35, and children, Harriet 16, William H. 14, Peter 12, George 9, Orstes? 6, all born at Ontario. Not far away also at Warwick Township (Div. 4, p.12) is George Johnston, 70, a farmer and widower, born Ireland, with his son or grandson Joseph, 23. With them is a Mary Ann Dell, 15, born in the US, Mary Jane *Thyner (Thorner) 20 and George Thaner (Thorner) 22, both born in Ontario. This is possibly the George Johnson that is the brother of Edward Johnson of Malahide who joined the LDS church.
In 1880 at Chase Township, Lake County, Michigan (census, ED 155, sheet 1, line 8.), is Humphrey Johnston, 39, a farmer born at Canada. He indicates that his father was born in Ireland and his mother at York State. Other sources indicate she was born in Canada. With him are his wife Hellen, 35, keeping house, born at Canada, whose father was born in Canada and her mother at New York State and son, John A. 12, at school, born Canada, and a daughter, Ermina, 1, born Michigan. (at Sheet 2) is William H. Johnson, 30, born Michigan, with wife Elizabeth, and daughter Fay, 5, next to Enoch Wintermute, Hellen, 49, his wife. They are from Canada.
In 1891 (most 1890 census for US destroyed by fire). Humphrey was living in Bickford, Ontario in 1898. In 1900 or 1901 (Check Michigan Census and Bickford, Ontario).
According to the obituary of his brother, Joseph, he was living at Springfield, Ontario in December 1923.

Humphrey Johnson (sic) Died In His 91st year. Burial Took Place Near Watford (Bethel Cemetery, Arkona)
Humphrey Johnson, one of the oldest residents of the district, died at the home of his son, John Johnson, in Malahide township, just east of Aylmer on Thursday, March 19th, after a short illness. He was ninety years old on December 3rd, 1930, and had always been particularly smart for his years. Until a few weeks ago he thought nothing of walking in the two miles to Aylmer.
Mr. Johnson was born in Malahide and was engaged in farming for many years. He moved to Michigan where he remained for some twelve years, moving from there to Sarnia where he resided for the next 15 years. He returned to Aylmer in 1914, and a few years later again took up his residence in Malahide. He was a member of the United Church and in politics was a staunch Conservative.
His wife predeceased him about 10 years ago. Surviving are one son, John Johnson of Malahide, a grand-daughter, Mrs. Basil Anderson, Birmingham, England, and a brother Albert of Malahide.
The funeral service was held on Satuday morning, many friends and neighbors being present, Rev. Waldmar Williams had charge of the service which the congregation sang Rock of Ages, accompanied by Mrs. W.T. Harmer. Among those present from a distance were John and Adolphus Wintermute of St. Thomas. The pallberaers were William Harmp, Sam Beecher Harper, William Summers, Alex Summers, Andrew Baxter and James Briggs. The remains were taken to Watford for interment was made in family plot in Bethel Cemetery.
