John S. Abbe, 87, of Owendale, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 20, 2010, on his birthday, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe.
He was born Feb. 20, 1923, at the home of his parents, the late Ezra and Hattie (Diebel) Abbe in Oliver Township.
On June 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Genevie V. Severn at her parent’s home in Oliver Township.
John farmed the family farm until 1964, and was employed at the Wallace & Morley Elevator for 20 years. In 1969, he and Genevie opened Abbe AFC Home in Owendale and operated it until retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Owendale, where he was an elder for more than 50 years. He was very involved with his church, and enjoyed woodworking, reading, gardening and taking his grandchildren fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Genevie; three children, Dennis (Berniece) Abbe of Owendale, David (Mary Ann) Abbe of Gagetown and Denise (Tim) Lenhard of Prudenville; six grandchildren, Christopher, Deann (Dave), Melinda (Rick), Bryan, Jenny (Tim) and Jonathon (Amy); three great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Justin and Tristan Brenner; two brothers, Glen (Hazel) Abbe of Elkton and Jake Abbe of Caro; a sister, Iva (Elmer) Andrews of Grant Township; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Severn of Royal Oak.
Preceding him in death was a daughter, Janet Abbe; granddaughter, Zoie Abbe; and a sister, Velma Severn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton, where friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday.
Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson Association or the donor’s choice.
