Paul Daniel Lovelace
M, #75447, b. 17 January 1912, d. 7 January 1996
Parents
Biography
Paul Daniel Lovelace was born on 17 January 1912 in Bad Axe, Huron, Michigan. He and
Marie Alphid Anderson were married on 29 June 1935 in Bay City, Bay, Michigan. He died on 7 January 1996, at age 83, in Sebewaing, Huron, Michigan. He was buried in Assembly of God Church Cemetery, Sebewaing, Huron, Michigan.
Paul Daniel Lovelace was a Creamery Proprietor.
1 At the age of 16, Paul moved from his family's farm in Bad Axe, MI to Pontiac, MI where he worked in a factory with two of his older brothers. When he was 18, in 1930, he became a butter maker and bought a dairy in downtown Sebewaing, MI. Dairy farmers in the area separated the milk from their cows, feeding the skim milk to thier pigs and selling the cream to either the Sebewaing or Lovelace Dairy. The Lovelace Dairy produced 1,000 to 1,500 pounds of butter a week. Paul would sell his butter to local stores. He had contracts with Swift & Company and Armour & Company. The butter was hauled to warehouses in Saginaw, MI and Detriot, MI. Hired men drove trucks on cream routes to pick up the cream from the local farmers. Ladies were hired to print wrappers for the butter, wrap the butter, and pack it into 30 or 50 pound boxes. Since buttermilk is a by-product of butter making, Paul and Marie decided to buy a farm and the edge of town and feed their buttermilk to pigs.
The pig business started out with 8 pregnant sows and one big old boar. The sows gave birth to nearly 90 piglets. That meant more hired men for the farm.
During WWII, Paul became a welder at Defoe Ship Yard in Bay City, MI to do his part for the war effort.
By the 1950's the butter-making business had changed. Farmers no longer separated milk, dairy farms became larger, and they shipped their milk to larger dairies. Paul's butter-making and pig business was no longer.
After the end of the butter-making and pig business, Paul started a junk yard at the farm while also working at the Michigan Sugar Factory. The tillable acreage of the farm was rented on shares. Paul remained in the junk business until his death in 1996.
